I remember when someone was making a similar complaint about Spark that they said they had made some changes and from what Jase has said they are working well. I was hoping that BigPipe had made the same changes but it would appear not :(

But during that time it wasn't bad on BigPipe, I just had to download the repository on my server and download it via HTTPS - that maxed out my line. So, the capacity is there it is just something a little screwy with the routing.

hey guys, interesting discussion.

As others have mentioned, it's really difficult to get a 'true' test of speed using speedtest.net when testing to overseas servers.

We buy our transit just the same as other ISPs, and always make sure we have more capacity than we need on tap (i.e. I promise you we certainly aren't doing any congestion by under-provisioning the amount we buy).

We have very little control over how the upstream routing works though, (and there are so many variables it's very difficult to tell a genuine problem vs some random stuff) but we can certainly flag issues upstream and see what comes back.

If you haven't already, please get in touch with our support team about the issue - best thing is to include as much info as you can about what you've tried and the results so we don't need to go back and forth with asking you questions.

(e.g. include your speedtest results for sure, but also include the results of actual file downloads you have tried, and feel free to link to this thread so whoever picks it up can see it).

I am with Bigpipe and my speeds are fine to most places in NZ and Australia however I have noticed a significant dip in speeds internationally as well.

To Auckland

To Wellington

To Sydney

To LA

I used to see much better speeds to LA and better latency too. Used to be roughly 130/80 120ms. Not sure what is up but it does impact my experience now and then. I am a large data consumer.

Just throwing more info into the mix. I know people with other ISP's seeing much better international speeds. I can't complain nationally and to Australia for 200/200, Speeds are either close enough to exceed expectation.

I have been wondering for a while if this issue was just me or everyone on Bigpipe. Don't get me wrong. Great deal for your money considering most of what the average person will use is cashed on either NZ or Australian servers however if you're like me, Some of my work requires pushing and pulling large amounts of data from US servers. Not that I should be complaining but this is an issue that would be nice if Bigpipe could look into.

I did do a raw download test and I'm seeing roughly 120mb/s which is more than speedtest states which is nice

To be fair I didn't notice it until this thread was pointed out - still getting quick speeds in general. Reminds me of the Spark issues at the start of the year (almost an exact carbon copy too).

This is actually one of the reasons I made this thread. IIRC Spark made some changes that actually required the ONT to be rebooted and I had hoped that BigPipe had made the same changes, to the point where I actually power cycled the ONT and router before I did my speed tests.

I got Bigpipe UFB 200/200 installed today, Still have my 2Degrees VDSL 70/29 connection running, so thought id do a direct compare

tests were run over ethernet, within a minute of each other, using Chome browser. No other internet traffic

Bigpipe on a Fritzbox 7490 vs 2degrees on a 7390.

LOCAL SERVER - Bigpipe Wins.

AU servers, both within -5% to 10% of results as above for both ISPs, bigpipe wins due to 200/200 vs 70/29, no need to post these no problem here

LA Servers

WEBNX- Bigpipe wins.

LA Singtel - i tried bigpipe 4 times, similar crap results compared to 2degrees, 2degrees VDSL wins.

LA Gigenet - 2degrees VDSL beats Bigpipe UFB

Time to try something other than speedtest.

SourceForge Speedtest - 2Degrees VDSL beats Bigpipe UFB on Download, but Bigpipe upload is fantastic - weird.

Time for a different test, nPerf to LA. 2degrees VDSL beats BigPipe UFB on download yet again, but Bigpipe Upload is much faster.

I ended up posting a ticket in the end to @BigPipeNZ since speeds are pretty bad right now - I was downloading a CentOS ISO from the Canterbury University Linux mirror which normally would max out my line however tonight I was only getting 2MiB/s and that was using a download manager so something isn't quite right. I thought this may have been the server so tried other mirrors with very similar results. I fully checked my network and redid the configuration on my Edgerouter.

Note - this has happened with almost every ISP at some point. I'd like to remind people that 2degrees, Spark, Orcon all have had similar problems at some point so it is something I can live with for now since speed issues are incredibly hard to diagnose but would love somebody to look into it. I forgot to put on my support ticket that my Smokeping server generates traceroutes every 12 hours here: https://murfy.nz/bigpipe-performance/ which could aid with investigation. The ironic thing right now is IPv6 over my Sixxs tunnel is incredibly quick for grabbing (actual) Linux ISO's and was getting 18MiB/s via that vs the 2MiB/s with IPv4 + BigPipe to the same server.

Yes, Linux ISO's are a real thing and I was needing a couple of them tonight :)

So I noticed that WEBNX server seems to be the faster of the LA servers so I tested mine,Much like dan's connection, 200/200 in Auckland. Same latency with slightly higher download and upload though it is midnight
