Oh god, I'm switching to BigPipe VDSL right now, because VDSL became available on our street recently. Now, after reading your post Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt prevails in my mind..

why? its got nothing to do with the ISP

do what was suggested and check what your neighbours are getting.

check your current stats post them if you like, and ask your ISP for a prequal

Why? Because I could never imagine that VDSL speeds can be on-par or worse than ADSL. This was a nasty surprise.

What is a prequal?

Stats (before switching, as switch has not happened yet):

Hi sespri,

I wouldn't worry too much as you might get lucky and score a much better connection on VDSL than we did. There are many factors that can effect the connection, many of which have been addressed in this thread.

It has been suggested that in our circumstance that our connection profile had to be reduced to the extent that it was because of cross-talk interference on our street. So in essence our VDSL signal was interfering with others ADSL connections and had to be reduced as a result.

Unfortunately in our case the reduced performance was in many ways worse than ADSL so back to ADSL we went. No big deal, Bigpipe switched it over the same day I asked for it and it's all back to normal here. No cost involved in switching and the fact that there are no contracts involved and no huge connection fees it's not a big deal compared to other ISP's.

I would be hesitant to switch to another provider, when in the case of our VDSL experience there is nothing the ISP could do to improve the connection. The bottle neck to performance is clearly with Chorus and the old copper phone lines.

Good luck, I hope it works out well for you.

Cheers,

Catz.

a prequal is an estimate of what your connection is capable of, but is no way indicative of what you will get. good way to see if its worth while or not. but you can take the results with a grain of salt sometimes.

over about 900m vdsl can and does perform worse than ADSL becuase it uses higher frequencies which degrade faster over longer distances. its juts how the technology work.

So given my attenuation of 22 I don't have much better chances than CaTz?

the latency more than doubled from 15ms to 35ms+.

How do you measure this one? My modem stats page (above) does not give this figure.

Latency (ping) is measured by speed testing:

For example, in this test on a 100Mbps VF cable connection, my latency was 8ms.

It's important to specify which server you are testing against - in this case it was Vodafone Wellington - the closest server to my home.

I generally just use a windows command prompt and ping various servers.

I use linetest.nz primarily. E.g. "ping -n 10 linetest.nz".

Speed test are good too as that test latency as well as up down speeds.

I go with the Auckland servers because the latency is usually much higher to my closest location (Wellington) and the results are typically more reliable.

Another way is an actual ping test which also includes tests for line jitter and packet loss giving a final grade to your current connection.

When you run this test it establishes the best location for testing based on best ping. For me this is always somewhere around Auckland.

Not the best test, ping is a little higher than usual because my boys are no doubt streaming videos and voice chatting while gaming etc....  LOL

Cheers,

Catz.

ping increases because interleaving gets turned back on.

On the lowest profile on VDSL there is zero delay in the modem, and your ping is only the time taken to get to the server and back. With interleaving on it can add 8 or 16ms each way to the journey

My current ADSL sync rate, speed test and ping test.

This time without the 4 other family members using the net. In otherwords and Ethernet isolation test.

VDSL for our connection was only a few Mbps faster on the download, otherwise ADSL continues to be better here than VDSL.

I think our best option is to stay on ADSL until UFB2 gets here.

Cheers,

Catz.

And this is my brand new VDSL:

This is rather disappointing.

VDSL is not always the best choice for a longer line.

The problem is, it does not seem to be a good way to find out before trying.

"xDSL expectations v reality"

@zespri   Your reality is that your VDSL performance is worse than ADSL.

As others have said, this has nothing to do with your ISP, and everything to do with line length.
Go back to ADSL.

(See my earlier post - I had the same experience - it's really, really frustrating  frown)
