So they probably should be specific about that so that people know what to expect.

Isn't Yahoo independent? It could have been Gmail or Hotmail, also independent?

No it was because it had huge problems. . Even recently yahoo has had major problems with their email servers. Even now it regularly doesn't login, and can't authenticate. So I suspect they are just sick of how flaky it is, and the expensive support required to support a flaky system. Also there was not direct contact between the customer and the service provider as they contracted it out overseas. This is why they moving to another provider as they had a big review of it a few years ago, and using a NZ supplier makes it a lot easier to knock on their door if it has any problems.

Ive been using their webmail since Aug 18 2007 (or was it 2006?) 7-30pm. Issues? maybe 3 or 4 at most? Why webmail? Unlike Hotmail and Gmail it was a clean UI. I'm not tied to any device. iOS uses Port 587 SSL but you set it up with a UN and PW. That scenario is ideal for anyone, not many want to p%ss around with settings per device, or with IMAP that Yahoo doesn't support. The masses aren't GZers. Gmail put me off with an ugly busy UI. My second login gave me heaps of Bose spam.

If you used Gmail or Hotmail do they give you a NZ helpdesk?

I've personally not had too much trouble using or supporting Yahoo Xtra email for acquaintances. But the Yahoo Mail platform clearly suffers from a lack of investment by its parent company (considering its state), an absolute minimum of effort put in for something to still be considered supported. Security wise, it is rotten to its core, didn't the hackers get hold of a good chunk of users' address books? Surprised there haven't been more social engineering attacks since that breach.

I haven't had any issues with it and I always access it via third party apps. In saying that, I hate the web platform. As an aside I also hate gmails but that might be because I never use it.

I remember that well .

Initially , Yahoos inbuilt spam filter blocked emails from Trademe, and other legit NZ companies : so there was obviously minimal testing done 1st .Lets not whitelist email from
NZ no.1 website/service

Hopefully , the new system will allow users to login & turn the email hosts spam filter off (something that yahoo wont allow, last time I checked)
And I hope that this time, personal email wont be scanned to look for keywords to deliver ads to users . I cant believe Telecom allowed that : a possible breach of NZ privacy laws right here .

Im guessing the contract with Yahoo is at end of term ?
Yahoo seems to have been reasonably trouble free so far this year: previous years they have had some shockers : I seen 3 day delays for sending/receiving , a/c's been locked out if the user dared to login with PC & ph at the same time , the website security issue (that got them hacked ) the list goes on .....

In theory, yes. However:
* I have had the same @xtra address for fifteen-plus years, so there are lost and lots of places and people where that is the account key or at least my primary contact, and
* Because I was a fairly early adopter, my address is <first name>.<last name>@xtra.co.nz - this is not available on any of the common 'ISP independent' platforms.

So I have quite a big incentive to stay with Xtra.
