If phones are sold at subsidised prices I think it's a perfectly legitimate business model. If you're buying a handset at a full price or are out of contract then IMHO the network should provide you with unlock codes for free for the handset and this is common practice overseas.

Yeah apart from the fact Vodafone DONT sell phones as subsidised prices. They are standard RRP which can be hundreds of dollars more than other retail outlets.

In fact, you CANNOT sign up to Vodafone without going on at least a 12 month contract, which you HAVE to take a phone or extra minutes with.

Vodafone simply wouldn't allow me to sign up a new connection without taking a phone or minutes, and having over a hundred dollars of cancelletion fees. Talk about not wanting peoples business.

Vodafone does offer Motormouth on account without contract. However motormouth on account is hardly attractive these days.

A couple of questions, regarding when this network will be up and running:

Will GSM phones work on this new Telecom network (as Mauricio already has asked)
Will video calling be possible (I assume it will)
Will Telecom drop its prices and offer package deals simular to Vodafone's Best Mate & Vodafone Family?

Interesting news! well I wonder if we would ever have to change the CDMA handsets as I only have an old kyocera on prepay. Will they ever get rid of it like they did with the old 025?

thanks Loftus. I was going to post these very questions.

I like Telecoms plans, but I hate their handsets. The lack of availability of decent mid range Nokia handsets (I won't pay more than $300 for a phone) is really getting to me. Mostly Nokia's fault I understand, but still.

Hopefully this means I'll have more of a choice of phones to choose from once it all gets underway.

I have been recently using a HTC TyTN II in the Wellington network lab. It is a really nice PDA/Phone/GPS/Geek toy

Given the selection of compatible handsets available today, I imagine that Telecom will have a decent selection of phones available for launch at the end of the year.

sbiddle: I've just been down to Petone and back, can confirm GSM850 + 2100MHz WCDMA coverage off the Lower Hutt Exchange, Woburn and Petone sites. These sites all have new 2100MHz panels fitted.

Are you sure the 2100MHz coverage is coming from the Telecom site?

Well unless there is another player that we don't know about using the 530 05 network ID! :-)

Currently Telecom charges $1 per video txt!
Video txt? I mean, come on!
And a dollar a pop???

Vodafone currently offers Bestmate, $6 a month - unlimited video CALLING, as well as unlimited txt's and phone calls!

There is currently no comparison.

Even just comparing the video services, and their associated prices, Vodafone currently win hands down.

I hope Telecom come to the party, even to just match Telecom would be beneficial to me, but it would be even better if Telecom being able to offer similar services as Vodafone currently do, brings the prices down across the board.
