Linux: clearly you have not used broadband in other countries and your statement has no merit

Having used it in Greece for a month (across a range of ISPs) I can confidently say that ours is an order of magnitude better. I haven't been to the US for a while, but I know that we're better than Australia! I'm sure that many foreigners would indeed consider our fibre to be ridiculously fast and therefore I think that Psilan's statement does indeed have merit.

Nope. Not at the moment, anyway. :)

(There are some good reasons why outlined in this thread, but I can add that there also simply isn't that much demand for it.)

That's it in a nutshell. For now, Bigpipe traffic makes a round trip to Auckland where our BNGs live, and back to you.

That's it in a nutshell. For now, Bigpipe traffic makes a round trip to Auckland where our BNGs live, and back to you.

Won't 2degrees be doing the same for international traffic, though? I'd guess it's due to different international routes/providers. Global Gateway (used by Bigpipe, Spark, and some other ISPs) have some annoyingly high latency routes compared to other providers.

No I moved from 2d in Chch, to BP in Chch. Pings times to EA(aus I presume) game servers went from 30-40+ms.

Ping times on all speed tests went up also.

Speed in general however did increase. 820D to 930D

I am also on 200/20 with Bigpipe here in Auckland (since just before Christmas) and would also like to see it bumped to at least 50 up, for the same price.

I had fibre at a different Auckland address in 2013/2014 with Orcon and they bumped me up from 100/20 to 100/50 just by me asking (if they could do better than a competitor)

Same. I've now resorted to two load balanced (Draytek) adsl lines to make it bearable for the next year or so. Amazingly the Draytek actually does a great job of load balancing (per session) across two different ISP's (one UCLL and one EUBA).

Actually, its very easy for an ISP to offer something less than the UFB line speed by applying a rate limit on their BNG. While the ISP pays the UFB cost for the faster line, the IP transit cost is a separate thing for the service provider and what the OP is asking is not actually in any way unreasonable. So a 200/100 or similar delivered over a 1000/500 is quite doable if the SP thinks there is a market.

Out of interest, what sort of difference do you think there might be in the transit cost, for example between a "gigabit" user and a user provisioned with a 200/100 profile on top of a 1000/500 input service?

Hint, I'd almost bet that the 200/100 users would be higher than the "Gigabit" users on average. Even if they're not, I'd predict no difference, therefore no difference in cost, therefore it makes no sense.

For smaller ISPs those with 1Gb handovers there is a big difference.

Those ISPs are also the ones who may still offer those 100/50, 100/100 type plans.

yea thats the one

people seem to forget wholesalers and ISP's are businesses, the more products they offer the more money it costs them to administer those products. there is also little to no cost difference between some of those products so why offer something for a slower speed when you can offer something for a higher speed for the same price?
