200/200 and 1000/500 costs about the same wholesale, so not much point offering the first option.

My main gripe is the jump from 20UP to 500+ is just crazy. I'd like a non restrictive upstream speed as an option without having to get gig.

20 is restrictive. I got better with VDSL.

Without having to get gig, or without having to pay $129/mo? If Bigpipe (or ISP X, Y, Z) were still selling 200/200 at $129 per month, would you still be enquiring about this?

It just doesn't make sense (IMO) for an ISP to sell 200/200 or 200/100 now that 1000/500 is available. Have a look at these two pages, they list the Chorus wholesale UFB costs: 1 2

Sure it can do up to 100/50 in some cases, but Thats very rare.

I agree, a 100/50 or something would be nice, but as others have pointed out cost to performance ratio is simply isn't really worth adding the complexity. 

I can sell you a Mikrotik router that will cap your broadband at 200/200Mbit? I think it is crazy now people are arguing the point that 1000/500Mbit is too quick (and it is). Guess NZ doesn't have third world broadband anymore...

I live in Auckland and am stuck on copper until 2019. While some people have awesome internet available, until the UFB rollout is complete in all major centres, it is my view that NZ internet still has a long way to go. :)

Copper here is miles ahead of most of the US that can either get a single providers ADSL from the exchange (no cabinets there) or else over subscribed cable like wellington had for ages. I know of people on a 100/5 cable plan that barely get 30/peanuts most of the time.

Oh for sure, on average things are better than many countries (looking a you, Australia). Just not everyone is lucky enough to have access to the tech that enables it yet. Until that's no longer the case, work is still needed, and the sooner it happens, the better.

By 2024, definitely. Right now, there are people in the middle of our largest city that can't get more than 10Mbps on DSL. Some will have the option of fixed wireless but that doesn't have unlimited.

What city are you referring to? I live on the North Shore and have 100Mb fibre.
