I doubt that they'd bother to 'harass' a scam-scammer. It'd just waste more of their time.

I agree that messing with these dorks (and dorkettes) can be time consuming but I'm retired, so no problem. Great fun.

Dingbatt: You don't need special skills. Really. Just fake extreme old age or imbecility. Or ramble in a made-up language.

Re abusing them, I went down that track when I first started getting their calls.

When one guy called, I said, 'Wow, it's noisy in your office. Are you on a busy road?'

'Uh, yes, very busy.' he said.

I replied, 'Then how about you go outside and throw yourself under a bus?'

'DUCK SHOE!' he screamed (or something like that) and hung up.

These episodes of the Reply All podcast are a must listen in relation to internet scammers, in which the host ends up traveling to India to track down the people who tried to scam him. It’s incredibly funny in parts, but also demonstrates the types of organisations behind the scamming.

Jonathan18: Thanks for the links, very interesting stuff. Seems like these scamming call centers are really big business.

Shucks, what a way to make a living.

But most of the kids who make these calls don't make a living, anyway. Because the bosses don't pay them.

LOL, next time I get a call I'll ask the guy if he works for Accostings :-)

We have a room at work called the Chill Zone where our staff take breaks or work when they're answering tickets and don't need to be at a desk. On occasion if someone's having a bad day, they go into the Chill Zone and we've got a VoIP phone with 8 lines (different numbers throughout the world) which they use to call scammers and just mess with them a bit. We get the numbers off those stupid pop-up ads you usually see on "free movie" sites.

Sure it's a bit of a waste of time, but sure makes for some entertaining results.

I've got a troll VM  ........ I then try and pay them with a fake credit card number which just declines.

My record is just over 2 hours on the phone.

Beautiful. Wish I got these calls so I could have similar fun!

Wish I knew how to do it!

The trouble is ...... I had a genuine client ring me the other day and his accent made me inclined to hang up on him!

My Mum had one call her from the "Microsoft" department. Luckily I was there and able to pick up the call. I told him if he was really from Microsoft he would have the Windows serial key. When he stammered he didn't, I told him I didn't believe him as I have a friend who works at Microsoft and they never do this. Hung up on him.

He called back twice and the third time started swearing at me, saying "I just want to help you, you b----y as----e". I think I ruined his day. Amusing for me however.

Another good trick is to string them along for a few minutes, then say "oh but I've got a Mac, is this going to work?" They usually end the call pretty quickly at that point.

michaelmurfy: I've got a troll VM that appears as a regular computer - has an Acer background and is riddled with malware and appears to be well used.

Nice idea! Have established this pic as a wallpaper . I'm curious what they will say when they'll become aware of. smile

I had a call from a unknown caller tonight on my cell phone they wanted me to access my computer/ipad I told them I didn't have a computer and my ipad was broken they said what happend I said it caught fire they said they can fix if I send to microsoft they also said I must have internet (I said I didn't) they said where do you live I said ''pakistan'' they said you have internet in pakistan. anyway I was laughing though the call and asked if it was a prank I thought the whole thing was funny .. they said no it's not a prank your computer has a virus.. they ended up hanging up on me.. anyway I was wondering does anyone think my call had anything to do with Vodafone? cause I called them today and while I was taking to this person I got 2 texts from vodafone asking how I would rate the call and how likely I am to recommended Vodafone to a friend or relative.... coincidence? I thought it was one of my friends playing a prank on me it sounded like one of my friends disguising his voice.

I have only ever had 1 of the microsoft scammer phone calls. it ended pretty quick when they asked me to open the start menu, and I told them that my computer doesn't have one as im running Windows 3.1

I get more calls offering investment scams though. I asked 1 of the callers if they were a registered on the FSPR. They said no. So I said they were breaking the law by offering financial services in NZ. The woman on the other end started yelling at me "dont tell me how to do my job". I replied that you are not above the law. She then hungup.

Do these indian scammer types only phone land lines? I've had a grand total of one scam phone call to our land line in my entire life (so far). We don't have caller ID, so it could have come from anywhere on the planet.

I should ask my partner if she ever gets any scam calls to her cellular telephone. Not having a cellular telephone means I don't get any calls, etc from anyone (yay).

LOL. It's great that those of you who've never been pestered by these fools are keen to receive calls.

Spread the word. Do whatever you can to raise public awareness about this colossal (and frequently costly) nuisance.

But always remember: WASTE THEIR TIME. It's the worst thing you can do to them.

Sure, you CAN shout at them, or swear at them, or argue with them, or try to reason with them about the 'wrongness' of what they're doing, but if you really want to screw them up (or get blacklisted and get no more calls) keep them talking and WASTE THEIR TIME.

TIP: If you have Caller Display and notice that the incoming number is unusually long, don't answer it in your usual forthright and ebullient manner. 'HELLO! ROGER HERE!'

Instead, imagine that you're a 103-year-old influenza sufferer. 'Are you (cough, cough) there?'. Or, tremulously, 'Is that you, (wheeze) Audrey dear?'

But also endeavor to sound like a 103-year-old with plenty of money :-)
