cyril7: If your modem reports your on ADSL2+ and your modem reports a sync speed north of 8Mb/s then you are on ADSL2+, no marketing department needs to help you get a further fix. However some ISPs are limiting some plans to around 8Mb/s regardless of what your sync speed is, of particular note is Xnet, there standard DSL plan is limited to 8Mb/s only the naked fusion plan lets you get speeds higher than this. Most other ISPs impose no other limitiation, again could you please explain how a marketing rollout can influence technical issues? The world would be a very sad place if marketing was all we lived by!!!
Thing to keep in mind that if you are on a FS/128k plan then your real max download will never reach much over 4.5Mb/s (regardless of sync speed) due to the limit in uplink ack rate that 128k will allow.

Hi Cyril, whilst this maybe usually the case, I have two friends who both have 128k Upload plans & thye are currently getting download speeds of 6.5Mbit & 7.9Mbit respectively. I agree that usually 4.5Mbit is the "average MAX Download speed" for people who have 128k upload, but as always there are exceptions to the norm & my two freinds must have all the right conditions, would be very interesting to see what they get with MAX Upload.
cyril7: If the connection you are performing uses UTP as opposed to TCP then it is possible to bypass the ack response limitation.

AFAIK both these people are using standard TCP connections, it's just the fact that all the conditions must be pretty much ideal for them both. One of these people actually manages to pull down 800kbp/s from New Zealand websites & around 540kbp/s from International websites & with a line that is technically limited to 128k Upload, that ain't too shabby at all.Out of interest, neither of these people are with Xtra for Broadband, one is with Orcon (6.5Mbit) & the other is with Vodafone (7.9Mbit).
cyril7: 800kb/s is not too flash. I take it in all these you are refereing to the actual download speed as in measured throughput, not sync.

Considering I stated their average reported speeds are 6.5 & 7.9Mbit, then obviously I am referring to their actual throughput as being 800kbp/s (for the 7.9Mbit sync speed), which is above aeverage for most people, bearing in mind here that their upload speed is 128kbp/s.
