After a few days of internet hiccups (while they modified our local cabinet), we've now got ADSL2 with Xtra.

Has there been an advertising campaign for it that I've missed?

I would have thought they would have been making a big song and dance about it (especially based on their recent advertising campaigns).

Um, what? What do you mean you have ADSL2? Have your speeds changed? Plan details? Because if it's just changed in your router interface that don't mean jack...

How do I know that I've got ADSL2?

- Modem now reports downstream/upstream of 16770/944 (previously around 7616/760)
- ADSL2 modulation now works (used to be MMODE)
- Get 5Mb/s at 7:45pm (whereas I previously only got 1.5Mb/s at that time of night).
- Ping time of 89ms to servers in Sydney!

Oh, and the engineer that my wife harrassed the other day said he was swapping us over to a new system that Telecom were trying to get out quickly. When she said "ADSL2?", he said that all he could say was that we should make sure we had an ADSL2 modem 8-).

You can't be sure they arent still putting you on a 8mbit ADSL1 profile, your speeds/ping probably improved because they replaced an overloaded dslam with an better islam.

Speedtest.net - if its over 8mbit, you have ADSL2. Otherwise you are capped to 8mbit like everyone else on xtra.

My modem (Allied Telesis AR256e) simply would not work on ADSL2+ modulation until they completed the change yesterday.

And now I go from around 2-3mbit to over 8mbit.

Up slightly earlier today (6:15am) so tried it again:

I'm happy with that as local versus international speeds.

first post here.

I’m a telecom employee (although not in the tech space) but this might be helpful to you. (from the telecom chorus website so not confidential)http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/n400,15.html AFAIK (and I say this as someone who has little tech knowledge so could be totally wrong) if you are on an exchange that has been migrated to ADSL2+ ( see here for timetable http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/f400,78247/78247_Exchange_rollout_update_080505_ADSL2.pdf ) AND you have an ADSL2+ modem (the new Thomson ones from Telecom are, as are plenty of other ones on the market) then you should be automatically migrated to ADSL2+ no matter what Broadband plan you are on Of course you might not notice much improvement as your speed depends on a lot of other stuff (distance from exchange for example)

Can anyone else confirm if this is correct?

Pretty sure I'm on adsl2
I'm in central Wellington and we've been connected at 18mbit for the last couple of months.
We'd been getting normal download speeds until last week when it jumped up to about 14mbit (1.7MB/s) .

It sped up around the same time as we moved over to the new Slingshot plans, so hopefully it's not a temporary glitch.

If your modem reports your on ADSL2+ and your modem reports a sync speed north of 8Mb/s then you are on ADSL2+, no marketing department needs to help you get a further fix. However some ISPs are limiting some plans to around 8Mb/s regardless of what your sync speed is, of particular note is Xnet, there standard DSL plan is limited to 8Mb/s only the naked fusion plan lets you get speeds higher than this. Most other ISPs impose no other limitiation, again could you please explain how a marketing rollout can influence technical issues? The world would be a very sad place if marketing was all we lived by!!!

Thing to keep in mind that if you are on a FS/128k plan then your real max download will never reach much over 4.5Mb/s (regardless of sync speed) due to the limit in uplink ack rate that 128k will allow.

The plan is irrelevant, you only need to be on an exchange that has been upgraded, and have a ADSL2+ modem and you should be on.

however, because Go Large has a slower upspeed I think your downspeed is limited by that (and it still has traffic management AFAIK) so you may find your speed will vary depending upon what you are doing (P2P, streaming video etc)

To answer the OPs other question, I think the reason telecom have not promoted this is because the commerce commission comes down pretty hard when they try to talk about speed (because speed depends so much on factors other than ADSL/ADSL2+. Also, ADSL2+ is only available to a limited part of the country at the moment so to go on TV or something big like that would be a waste of money.

I must be lucky as we get 300 - 400 kb/s on most of our downloads (especially if the files are big)
