When I asked about getting rid of the copper I was quoted a hundred and something bucks. I argued that I had fibre and I no longer wanted their equipment (i.e the old overhead lines) connected to my property. They refused to remove it without me paying.

That was back when I was with Snap/2Degrees. I might try again now via Spark.

So wait a minute. The lines are unused, will never be used, are not benefiting the company in any way, are just taking up space on your property and they want money to remove them? But if you do it yourself and do something useful with the wire you are 'stealing'? How does that work?

Just contacted Spark, who said I had to contact Chorus directly.

Contacted Chorus who said $158. I asked who owned the copper and he said I owned it so I would have to pay them to remove it. I countered that my understanding was that Chorus owned it up to the demarc point and so I wanted their equipment removed from my property and shouldn't have to pay. Politely ended the conversation before I lost my cool.

I also have a Vodafone coax cable that needs removing, which I apparently have to contact Vodafone about. @DjShadow what department at Vodafone did you need to contact to get this done?

I was never given the option to have either of these removed when I went to fibre several years ago.

I gather part of the reasoning that the copper wires don't get automatically removed are:

  1. It may cost a couple of bucks
  2. Theoretically a customer who has had Fibre installed to their premises may then decide they want to revert back to copper
  3. Does chorus have a right to dictate that once fibre is installed the possibility of a copper connection is removed forever

Personally I would say only a nutjob want want to go from fibre back to copper - but do you realise how much of the population is actually that stupid and illogical?

I understand that points 2&3 have been raised quite often by 'consumers'.

Call it the price of democracy - though it seems there is some inconsistancy where some is actually being removed and others not.

I organised it via their Social Media Team, I'm not very trusting of their Call Centres to get it right first time but even with Social Media I had to ask a few times to get it underway.

I went to fibre a year ago too, shortly after having the pole on my property replaced. I was quite disappointed when the copper line wasn't taken away. I've been meaning to ring Spark for ages (one of those things that just keeps slipping my mind) to see about getting it removed, sounds like it might be a bit of a waste of time.

I'm hitting up both Chorus and Vodafone via social media. I don't think i should have to pay to get these taken down, and I'm certainly not paying twice when it will likely be the same Downer tech removing both.

So, the Chorus social media team inform me that this needs to be organised via my ISP, and that their will be a cost involved.

Often these people are rather misguided and very opinionated to the point that it's just simpler to downgrade, let them understand for themselves...

I have 'fixed' the 'terrible ufb' for two colleagues recently.
They have both had fibre installed and told me 'the internet is worse than before'.

After asking a few questions I worked out they both got a nice new WiFi router and had connected to the 5ghz band. Of course that has a shorter distance and seems to drop off quickly. I told them to check for and connect to the 2.4ghz connection. They think I am a genius.

It made me think this must be an exceptionally common problem.

sadly it's very true.

The other big one is, customers with non RSP provided modems that can't preform gbit. (being non RSP provide, it's hard to advise X Y modem is trash. don't use.)

Don't you know that the optical light from a fibre connection gives off cancer causing radiation. I want my copper back please! Or maybe I'll just move to 5G because I hear that is safer because the super high frequency waves can't penetrate my body.

There were a lot of earlier threads, where if aerial fibre was being installed. They would refuse to install the fibre if you didn't give permission for the copper to be removed. The Resource Management Act was used as an excuse.

This meant that you couldn't get UFB internet and voice with Telecom if you had aerial cables. As Telecom at the time, couldn't provide voice over UFB.
