...Telecom ARE building a 3G 850MHz network, and it WILL be nationwide eventually....

Hmmm... you seem so convinced that is true but I am not sure.
I think I agree with bbman and his statement below - which I think is currently more accurate.

Just to correct with what is happening currently, Telecom are confirmed
to be rolling out 850GSM/ GPRS Edge to all sites nationwide - classed
as 2.5g.

Telecom is building a GSM/GPRS/EDGE network nationwide and initially a WCDMA deployment in the main centres. It will be a mix of 850 MHz and 2100 MHz.

Regarding the network rollout, freitasm got it in one :) Telecom is also deploying HSPA in comparison to Vodafone's HSDPA.

bbman:
One wee note. Telecom could also roll out REV A and then REV C EVDO nationwide which again will perform very well against UMTS on both 850/900mhz. They dont have a huge number of sites to do and it will cost a pitence compared to UMTS.

Telecom could, you're right. I doubt, however, that they'd like to be the first operator to announce a UMB deployment. With CDMA to LTE handoffs a confirmed reality, I doubt anyone will actually deploy it. That said, Telecom hasn't ruled out continued investment in the existing CDMA/EVDO network.
