Just to add to the story - I noticed the laptop also has outlook 03. Ive configured a new account and I'm able to send but receiving is a problem?! as per shots below:

It's pop3.xtra.co.nz not pop.xtra.co.nz

 

Outlook 2003 running on Vista with the latest updates should be OK, it is XP that does not have the cipher suites needed to connect using SSL/TLS.

Looks like that cracked it; gone with outlook 03 in lieu of winmail - thank you for all the helpful suggestions. 

 

Its refreshing to see an older computer still serving its intended purpose also the friend I'm fixing it for is in his 70s so to replace his laptop would mean navigating round new systems, UI etc.
