Something to do with the big river flood between Timaru and Ashburton ? Maybe wiped out some cables?

Could be the flooding at Rangitata has taken out the fibre. We are getting ready to cast off the lower south island.

Looks like a weather related major fibre cut. I don't have any info on ETR.

Will update if I have any more info I can share.

Chorus suddenly have a big cluster of copper outages just north of Timaru. Nothing noted for fibre.

husband has phoned tonight (using his company vodafone mobile) to say he has no service on his personal spark mobile in Wanaka.

Dig out some pics of the rangitata rail and main road bridge if you can.

Probability there is a multi core attached to it?. And earlier on, both were under water and I think the rail one may have sustained some errosion damage.

In which case, there might be a fairly big air gap either side of it that they might be splicing come sun up.

1/2 - Spark customers are currently experiencing broadband and mobile outages due to flooding and slips across the South Island affecting our customers. Unfortunately, our technicians cannot access the area due to road closures as a result of weather conditions.

2/2 - Our team is working hard to resolve the situation and we apologise to our customers for the inconvenience. We will share more information with you as soon as possible.

I do wonder how long it will be before they can restore service. Apparently this is affecting ATMs as well, among other things.

Yep eftpos and ATMs are lumped in the 'corporate' pool I suspect. No doubt the boffins are looking at microwave/sat offloading until some splicing can occur

Now that I'm home to laptop and Fibre <3

I know someone will know the proper answer to thing, Works 3 connections are Vodafone, all running full speed still, Vodafone have their own fibres correct? Spark use Chorus' ones?

What about the others? Eg I'm on Orcon, working fine. Spark down obviously, 2Degrees going slow I've heard... do the others mostly all buy capacity off Vodafones ones?

And for it to knock out all the Cell service, is this kinda like the (dare I speak) of the XT days, without communication to the RAN (was it? some abbreviation haha) the towers won't work?

My inner nerd wants to understand a lil bit more, thats all. Thanks in advance for some curiosity info

Pretty much. They're all fibre fed. And have multiple routes. But given the pooze conditions backup ones may be in use

Must be the same fibre route severing access for the lower South Island as back in 2014 except there will be a lot more than 1400 UFB this time. Scary to think there remains such poor redundancy.
