This issue cropped up again today.
Sent 1 txt message, then 30 seconds later, it doesn't work any more...

This time I tried changing the number from +6422xxxxxxx to 022xxxxxxx. That didn't seem to work. Then I tapped the contact name in the message thread and selected the number and it's working again for now.

It's pretty frustrating to have to troubleshoot such a basic phone function, especially when it works one second and not the next.

What plan are you on?

Have you tested the SIM on another handset as asked before?

I have not tested the sim in another handset no. Surprisingly, I don't have another phone to test with, it seems I got rid of them all.
I'm just on the $9 prepay plan. It's my personal # and mostly only gets used to text/call the missus. All the data use, and most of the phone calls are on the work SIM.

Being only one number, I feel like it's unlikely the SIM is the culprit, but stranger things have happened.

I'm feeling like this must be the messaging app itself screwing it up. I'll try harder to identify the cause if it happens again in the near future.

I could pick up a second SIM this week so I can transfer the number to it if the need arises.
I'm also thinking I'll get a new phone in the next few months anyway, the battery in this one is down to 80% capacity, and that's not great for my needs.

I don't think it's the SIM. In any, if you have an Android why store numbers on the SIM (unless you plan on using a feature phone later) seeing phone numbers can sync to your Google account?

And yes, perhaps try using the Google Messages app instead?

I'm not storing numbers on the sim... YUCK.
I'm saying I can transfer my own number (account) to a new sim.

That app is the one I've been using, I've never liked trying alternative apps for critical functions.
However, last night I decided to try Pulse SMS.

The sole reason for switching was the ability to schedule SMS messages to automatically send later.
Handy if I'm out of coverage for the day, or need to let work know I'm sick first thing in the morning.

It could be the SMS database on the phone is corrupted. You could try clearing cache and data (one at time) for the app (clearing data will delete everything) but ultimately you might try a hard reset on the phone.

It appears I forgot to mention that I factory reset this phone about a week ago. I was out of storage and couldn't seem to find why.

I don't usually mess with my phone this much. Aside from updates, some regular apps and sounds, it's basically stock.

I'll just have to see how it goes. Everything is working for now, if it happens again I'll swap the SIM.

Another user asked to unlock this, so I am going to ask a related question: anyone using dual SIM devices? Anyone using dual SIM devices with Google Messages app for SMS? Anyone on a single SIM device using Google Messages and that turned Chat features on? Anyone using Chat features but ran out of data?

No dual SIM. Have deleted my contact and re-inserted it. I'll try +64 prefix but its been working for 40 years so very odd.

Wifes phone, not only SMS but phone calls as well, started sporadically a couple of weeks back, but now regular on SMS, intermittent on phone calls with voice prompt 'unable to connect'.

This would seem to confirm its neither a storeage problem, or a blocking problem, rather a Skinny problem relating to wives 🤣

Surely Skinny could enter this thread and give some useful information?

I have management of my wifes Skinny account - wonder if that is the common denominator?

@ageorge doing the +64 is not going to change anything unless you are roaming

40 years are you sure?

Very odd solution. Worked on my wifes phone clearing messaging cache and checking other things made no difference.

Went to my phone tried to send again several times without success, then used Drupes messaging option, and message went through.

Then went to my phones contacts, opened wifes, edit, changed nothing but saved, sent SMS using messaging app, and it worked and appears to continue working.

I had the issue only with the default google messages app. Since I changed to Pulse, the problem hasn't returned.
