quickymart:

gzt: Just to be sure check this is installed and up to date:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/vp9-video-extensions/9n4d0msmp0pt?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

How can I tell if this is already installed? I tried to install it but it didn't give me an option to, leading me to believe it's already there.

I tested a Youtube 4K video in Edge but it wouldn't even play, just scrolling around with a white screen.

I noticed there's an update to this extension today and windows 10 17763 or later is a requirement.

+This,

Going from HD to 4K is a big jump for CPU esp when streaming streaming it off something like Youtube...

Does your machine skip frames if you are playing a 4K file locally?

GPUs can make a massive difference. If you have one that can do h.265 it won’t just be more efficient but there will be barely any load. (You get served h.265 beyond 1080p resolutions on YT)

OPs laptop shouldn’t even be attempting to go above 1080p(although the compression settings and the codec[h.264 by the way] used for 1080p and below is just absolute trash).

Things people should try:
If you’ve turned off hardware acceleration. Please turn this back on.
Update drivers.
Try a different browser(edge is just horrible despite it being almost the same chromium build as chrome itself, try latest chrome and/or latest Firefox).
Try throwing in a dedicated gpu that can do h.265 decoding at the VERY LEAST. (Desktop users who have iGPUs from Intel but an older dGPU you might have better luck on the iGPU for this specific scenario)

Too long didn’t read. You’re being served h.265 beyond 1080p and you need either newer hardware or you don’t have hardware acceleration turned on or your web browser is at fault.

This is on my desktop PC (not laptop). The same thing is happening with Edge, Chrome or Firefox. I checked Edge and hardware acceleration is already turned on there. Should I have it activated in my graphics settings as well?
I tend to concur with the consensus here though - my (early 2018) machine probably isn't powerful enough to play 4K videos.

Hi, using my 12yr old Dell 17" i7 (dual core) laptop, no stutter, no lagging, watch the entire thing just fine, top reported modestly high CPU% but still ran well below full chat, had rsync tasks happening in the background

Maybe you chaps need to change OS to something proper :)

Hi, Parrot, which is just a common debian based distro with lots of stock cyber tools, all our work environment is nix based, although our enterprise desktops are 2008r2 via Citrix on said nix desktop

I have never seen h265 from youtube - thats half the problem, because they use VP9 instead.

It was certainly an assumption based on that YT accepts h.265. If we're actually being served vp9 then I've got some serious questions myself.

That being said this early 2011 MacBook Pro 100% struggles to do 4K on it's pretty mediocre Intel iGPU but on my desktop with it's RTX 2060 it's barely doing anything and 4k and even 8k is flawless.

My main point was that hardware can absolutely make a difference here.

Same video on a brand spanking new i5-10500 10th gen?- not tanking out the CPU at all and no buffering

looks like if you want to stream 4k you need an ultra modern pc, anything 1-2 generations old just wont cut it anymore
