Gordy7:

As usual it is difficult to determine the weak link in a slow speed test issue.

Thanks Gordy. At first I really wasnt asking for advise on how to test this, I was thrown by a support staff suggesting my home ONT is not the one that requires testing by Chorus. But, since that was answered, I appreciate all the positive people lending a bit of time. Im confident I will have a quick resolution upon having access to the ONT to test :-)

TeaLeaf: Interestingly my old wifi card which is rated to about 900Mbps also seems to throttle at 100Mbps as well.

...possibly indicating the Ethernet between the Wifi router and ONT could be running at 100 Meg not 1 Gig (I've experienced the same thing - happens when you're indiscriminate in your cable selection :-) ). Don't forget to confirm the LED colours signifying 100 and 1 Gig links on your model of router.

Hey Cyril, she is non stop jibber jabber, is one of the leaders in her field of science so I usually do any changes to the internet outside of work hours. But I told her I need it after her last meeting, so about 2pm or so.

Presumably,SWMBO.
She who must be obeyed.

The term apparently not invented by writer John Mortimer, but heavily popularised by his Rumpole of the Bailey character as anyone of a certain age will likely remember...

I'm not of a certain age, but I use that term :-)

You won't get access (well, you have physical access I guess) to the ONT. It is Chorus's and part of their network. You can plug a router or computer in to the ONT and do a speedtest from that device, but you cannot speedtest from the ONT as you don't have the required access.

As described, She is the owner of the office the ONT is in, and yes the one who must be obeyed, a very intelligent scientist, not the crazy kind. Hopefully after dinner, I will have a play with the test. But no rush. bigpipe want a pppoe test so no drama. when I have time. will post the results.

Thanks all.

Has BP reported to you what your ethernet negotiation speed is?

They should be able to report that

Missed this. no. I havnt asked as I thought maybe its my Router.

But BP now instead of stating speeds they state avgs. The starter is is avg 322Mbps down it says. Im getting 180Mbps plugged int an Ethernet to the router. So I have no idea why its so much slower. It wouldnt be a problem outside downloading big files like 120GB games, I just have to be more patient :-)

Cheers mate, might just do that, I bought a used Voda Huawei for $20, I could try that instead. This Arcadyan just worked out of the box, but Im not sure if there are things in the router I can modify that might be slowing it down.

Have changed all the Ethernet cables to new ones just to rule that out.

I thought the Voda Huawei's had the firmware cooked to not allow PPPoE selection.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

yes, oddly BP had us on a static ip when we had our other plan and was using the Huawei.

I will read the thread in detail again as the answer might have been skipped over by mistake.

Im looking at 900/500 plans now, some are cheaper than our 300/100 with BP. Have loved BP though. Have been with them nearly a decade. Fantastic service oddly with it  being online, somebody with knowledge always answers which is the difference vs ringing a call centre of people who are not technical and forward it to somebody it is, I have enjoyed that difference with BP.
