I've had a skinny account since 2017 & it was set to allow on both options. Outrageous! Thanks for pointing this out. I thought I'd been through all the options on the dashboard to check for opt-in by default settings that I do not want, but clearly it was introduced since I last checked, or I simply missed it. Moreover, it took several goes to get them to STAY unticked once left the page & rechecked , in spite of the message that the setting had been saved. Now appears to have stuck but like someone else said - the horse has bolted. Will NOT be going with Skinny when it comes time to choose a provider for fibre.

^^ Is this applicable for Fibre? I can't see any options for it?

If they are providing our data to these big overseas companies I wonder how much money they are making from it?

Hey everyone.  Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

We’ve investigated and fixed the issue as of Tuesday 6th June.

We wanted to confirm that the privacy settings were being saved all OK in the backend, but the issue was with the frontend.  It was sometimes displaying the incorrect result, which made it look like the privacy settings were not saved.
We’ve resolved the issue so that the Dashboard will now correctly reflect your privacy settings.

Thanks,
Skinny

Oh, I thought they were going to apoligise for having those settings there in the first place. Silly me.

Is this kind of policy the norm, or is it just one of the ways that Skinny manages to make their service cheaper?

It seems like an outrageously cavalier attitude to customer privacy.

If I'd have seen this a week ago, I wouldn't have switched to Skinny.

Maybe I'm missing something, but looking at the privacy policy published on Skinny's website, I can't see any reference to them selling your email address and phone number to the likes of Facebook (unless you happen to find the setting and opt out).

This has annoyed me enough to start looking at switching away from Skinny. I'm going to look at switching my broadband away too; I'm not sure I can trust them.

The privacy policy (updated 5 July 2022) does mention a relationship with Google, Facebook and TradeMe.

To personalise your experience on third party websites and apps

We may use your supplied data, Skinny online experience data and usage data to:

Present you offers and information about Skinny products and services we believe will interest you when you visit other websites, apps or digital platforms. Make information about our products or services relevant to you when we promote them on platforms such as Google, Facebook and TradeMe.

We sometimes run advertising campaigns where we share your email address and mobile number with Google, Facebook and TradeMe to help us show you relevant content, offers and ads when you visit other websites. This also helps us avoid showing you information about Skinny products and services you’ve already signed up for.

Google, Facebook and TradeMe may provide us with aggregated, anonymised information about people who responded to the advertising campaign. This can include age brackets, gender, assumed interests and affinities for each campaign response type. This information won’t identify you. For example, Google, Facebook or TradeMe may tell us that most people who clicked on the ad were aged 20 - 40 and like cooking. Google, Facebook and TradeMe collect this information based on your browser language and online behaviour. Google, Facebook and TradeMe only provide this information about people whose privacy settings allow it. You can change your permissions in your Google, Facebook and TradeMe settings.

We use this aggregated, anonymised information to:

Understand the effectiveness of our content, offers and advertising. Provide relevant content, offers and ads to other people who may have similar interests, based on those who responded to the ad.

The information we share with Google, Facebook and TradeMe is provided to them so they can deliver these services to Skinny. Skinny is not selling this data to Google, Facebook or TradeMe, nor allowing them to use it for any other purpose. Please note, Skinny doesn’t use Facebook “Event Data” services.

Especially having them opt-in by default.

Hey folks,

This appears to be on-going. I tried several times and it keeps reverting to 'allow'. I reached out to Skinny on facebook and they are going to look into it. Can anyone else confirm?

Cheers,

Rhys

Same for me.  Bad enough it's buried and defaults to on, unacceptable to be unable to disable it.

Wow, that's the sort of setting that I wouldn't have even considered needing to look for. But you're right; if I set it to Opt Out and save, it flips back to Allow.

Edit: It worked the second time, when I also opted out of the "household" data.

This apparently worked at the time, but it has since flipped itself back to "Allow", and changing it to "Opt-out" didn't appear to save. The other link given in this thread (https://www.skinny.co.nz/dashboard/settings/preferences) does appear to work though.

Edit: No it doesn't. It seemed to stick once, but it's back to Allow again.

Can I request that my data you have harvested so far, before opt-out, be fully deleted?

I have also had the same problem with 'Share my data' Opt-Out not sticking, as of today (14/2/24).

The Skinny website seems to be problematic because I have had the same problem with changes to Notification Settings not sticking. I have contacted Skinny Support about this issue but they don't seem able to do anything or willing to forward the issue to someone who can.

It looks like this maybe fixed again, for now. The opt-out setting seems to be 'sticking' for all my accounts.
