am I correct of this:

Vodafone: primary 900MHz 3G, with 2100MHz filler in the big cities?

2100MHz 3G has been in the cities and big towns for years, 900MHz 3G is currently being rolled out everywhere else. I don't think 900Mhz 3G is being put in the cities but this doesn't matter as pretty much all 900Mhz 3G devices will do 2100Mhz 3G anyway.

UPDATE: To answer your question, I wouldn't say 900MHz is "primary". 2100 for the cities, 900 for the rural areas. This is clearly different to Telecom which is largely 850 everywhere with a few splatterings of 2100.

iPhone 2G will not work on Telecom as Telecom is not building a 2G network.

Because it's a 3G only network, only the 3G... I'm using my 3G iphone on the telecom WCDMA 850 network right now works very well.

As scott said.

Also there isn't an "iPhone 2G". There's Apple iPhone and Apple iPhone 3G...

For people reading this in the future, the 3G is not the hardware generation, but a branding, just to show that it connects to 3G networks. The original iPhone didn't have 2G in the name, and it just so happens it only connects to 2G (or as some call 2.5G for GPRS) networks.

I bet it does, works like it was meant too you mean!!

I think the marketing team at Vodafone will have to do a real good job to convince users that they have a true 3g nationwide network by May 31st.

Sure they will have 3G service from all sites but in urban areas Vodafone do not have a stable foot print that matches their 900mhz GSM network, fall backs occur especially in buildings etc. This is obviously going to change as in fill sites grow but Vodafone really need to deploy 900mhz UMTS to all sites quickley to get a true foot print to match their competitors nation wide all 850mhz network, plus NZ Comms 3g might also perform better also.

Also from what I understand and i could be wrong here, just because a site is rural does not mean it is 900mhz UMTS, that also is trick for young players. This may have changed and now all rural kit is 900mhz but a lot of the 3g deployment has been a mixture of 900/2100mhz.

Maybe an announcement soon about nationwide 3g at 900mhz with GSM in cities switching to 1800mhz over time to free up bandwidth?? Well maybe!!

Interesting news....

And there I was, thinking that it was a pretty clever marketing ploy by Telecom, having WCDMA 2100Mhz in the main centres, but WCDMA 850Mhz out of main centres....

That way, people might switch to Telecom with their current Vodafone 3G phones (most supporting WCDMA 2100Mhz only) while they were in the cities, but only discovering that it doesn't work outside of main centres, thereby an incentive to get a new phone from Telecom, and most likely sign up a contract too!

Same with roaming customers...  By not having 2100Mhz in the main centres (initially anyway), roaming customers will still be going on Vodafone...

I would think that until we have more WCDMA 850Mhz phones, and a majority of mobile users with these phones, it'll be a good idea to have WCDMA 2100Mhz in the main centres to draw customers over....

The largest telco in Australia, Telstra, is completely WCDMA 850MHz, as well as AT&T U.S... This means a lot of the incoming roaming will have no problem getting into the new network. Also most phones will be 2100MHz/850MHz anyway...

It was never a "ploy" to have 2100MHz in cities and 850MHz outside. The whole idea is to have not "patches" and make it a consistent experience for all users.

Telstra do have 2100mhz in the City, it was there from before Next G become available. They dont promote it nor do offer the next G services over it, Next G 850 is Telstras 3G network and 2100mhz is really an add on to the 900/1800 GSM network

3g one frequency nationwide is much more consistent for all users and the same level of experience where ever you go. Telecoms increasing infill in the cities for w850 will make this experience even better.

I would not be surprised that once the launch occurs that the network in certain areas out performs CDMA, urban areas deffinately, i know for a fact that the area i live in will be much better served on w850 than on CDMA simply because the new cell site is UMTS only.
