If only it were that simple.

A lot of websites/online accounts use your email address for log in purposes and that address is most likely used as part of the password recovery process. It can also be used as part of the log in verification process. For most people the password recovery process is an infrequent event, probably longer than 1 to 2 years. It's not just a matter of getting your email contacts updated with your email address.

Changing email addresses is much more of a hassle than updating a physical address. Changing an email address is certainly not the modern equivalent to changing your physical address as someone alluded to earlier.

Actually, it is.

You're making an easy sound overly complicated because email migration is probably something you've never tried before, and you are afraid of the unknown.

I've heard similar protests countless times from clients who once used Xtramail, generally right before moving them to another provider such as Gmail, (for the clients own good).

Generally takes 30-45mins,  often the most time consuming part of the job is thinking of a new email address. :)

I think you might have misunderstood what I was getting at. Sure there is nothing too complicated about the migration process. No argument there.

It's the stuff that needs to be done around the various logins that use the old email address. Sure you could continue to keep using the old address for logging in, in most cases, the email address is usually just a name or identifier.

More particularly I see the hassle is in resetting the recovery email on those websites is the issue. Doing that will take way more than 30-45minutes for most people. I know it would take much longer for me. Also what happens if someone forgets about a site and doesn't need to use the recovery process untill after the old address has been discontinued? Sure it's not the end of the world but it takes time and effort to sort out.

Unless I'm missing the point, it's not just as simple as migrating the email address.

Same hassle as changing a phone number since these useless websites use someone else's identifier as their own.

IMO using emails as logins on websites should have died off a couple of decades ago.

We have people that try to log in to works email website with their email password, and think that they have to change the password on the website because they have changed their email password. They literally decide that they have to be the same password. They call us because they cant log in after they changed the password, but they are using their new one on works website and its telling them its wrong and its our fault because we didnt change it when they changed it.
