None of the Telecom WorldMode handsets are compatible with the new Telecom WCDMA 850 network. This includes the BlackBerry8830, Samsung351, Samsungi325 etc

Quick question will new telecom handsets be able to dial emergancy numbers (ie. 111) if they can only see a Vodafone signal & vice visa

vodafone doesn't use WCDMA850 but i gues some of the handsets will be compatible with vfone dont know if 111 will work tho.

Probably only if the SIM card is removed. The phone won't register on a competing network but if it has to SIM emergency calls will probably work and most GSM operators have allowed this. You would need to dial 112 however as this is the international emergency number.

Yes you can even dial 112 with no SIM card

Sadly the GSM spec says that you can do a 112 and any other programmed emergancy number with a keylock and pincode on. Thankfully there is no billing for it on cellphones like on landlines because I had it happen heaps with the old sony ericsson phone when in the pocket.

Bloody arrogent of the spec architects to remove my ability to prevent the use of a piece of hardware that I own in that manner but thats the breaks with a european standard I guess.

edit: and on one occasion I am pretty sure it had found nzcomms to dialout on despite having a vodafone sim in it since the place I was at had no vodafone coverage indoors.

Hi all,

Are we all speculating or have we tried this out. I can tell you right now that i have pulled the USIM from an OCTA handset and put it into my Sony Ericssom W910i and it has worked perfectly. MAde calls etc. I do note however that no 3G connection was achieved as the handset only supports 850 on GSM. This was interesting to find as i was under the inpression that GSM was not being supported and/ or rolled out.

Yes a Vodafone handset can access Telecom's WCDMA network with a Telecom SIM IF the handset had WCDMA850 as part of it's specification.

That's IF said WCDMA850 Vodafone handset is unlocked...

Just a note

Telecom's network doesn't have any GSM component, it's 100% 850 WCMDA with 2100 WCMDA in the major cities.

A Telecom roaming SIM will not work on the new Telecom network.

If your roaming SIM worked it probably connected to NZ Comms which is why you were able to make calls, I believe these CSL SIM's were connecting to the NZ Comms network at one stage.
