LookingUp:

I was looking at getting the Xiaomi Ultra 15 phone as a replacement on the Black Friday special deal ($200+ off), as there would be value in having the excellent camera on that phone, but it appears that it's also not an officially supported Spark device so we run the risk of a similar problem down the track but with a much more expensive device.

You're best to get a new phone directly from Spark, that way it's guaranteed to work.

With the exception of Apple iPhone best to by a phone from the carrier you intend to use it on

Even a Spark sold phone may not have OneNZ or 2Degrees VoLTE profiles

Yep, it's going to make having a cheap dumb phone as a backup etc is not going to be so great. Doesn't look like the dual SIM CAT B40 obtained from Spark for such purpose will be much use on other networks (falls back to 3G on 2degrees).

I think I'm going to build something useful, using the knowledge and the people I know. Will be a sticky.

Exactly why I’ve kept my old iPhone 6s as a spare with a prepay sim of my broadband provider which I top up once a year or as needed. Good for when they give free data when your internet goes down. Still a good wee phone and most of the apps work on it. Can use for roaming when Skinny roaming won’t work overseas which is often.

An iPhone Xs Max I have here has had a few warnings from 2degrees regarding the 3G shutoff. It's possible this is due to old hardware at the local tower, but that's now been upgraded and the last few times I've turned it on I haven't received the SMS warning. (Yes it does stay on 4G for calls).

If shopping around (and not to promote just share my personal journey) it Might be worth checking out what One.Nz has on offer for you as credit to buy a new phone on an interest free plan. This checker even applies if you are presently using a sim from another operator.

Apple when through a "period of time" when iPhones dropped Band 28 I believe it was the X/XS/11 which is why error may be occurring, the 6s / 7 / 8 all have B28 and it was brought back in from the 12 onwards
