If you have a desktop Mac you can easily create a cheap Time Capsule NAS solution by connecting an SSD drive to that Mac and configuring it to be the network Time Machine backup drive, rather than going down the Synology route.

I've run out off direct ports on my Mac m4 mini. Besides why not connect via the router ?

I think the connected SSD Network Time Machine solution that Apple offer only works when connected directly to the Mac. For me it was just so much cheaper and easier to configure than doing a Synology solution. I have one drive formatted as APFS and then sub volumes - 1 for the local Time Machine, and 1 for my Laptops network drive. Took 5 min to setup and configure.

I just hope that with the demise of the legacy Apple Time Machine AFP protocols, that's ending with the introduction of macOS27, that they fully and with Apple simplicity, embrace the SMB protocol - PNP and forget - without going into to many techy settings, just like the legacy Apple Time Machine.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
