Interesting, slight hijack question…
“Am I able to simply get myself an IP phone, plug into my existing network / ISP (OneNZ, or any other ISP), and then subscribe to the $4 a month voip plan, porting my existing number”?

That’s exactly what I did, using a grand stream ATA to connect the legacy phones. After an initial snag where my ISP cut off my whole connection instead of just transferring the voice line, it has worked faultlessly
What's the number range Hero use if you don't port in a local landline number? Couldn't find them on NAD Number Register.
Edit: Looks to possibly be geographic numbers listed as "Blue Reach" and they don't offer free local calling within NZ it's either Landline Calls (2c+GST) or Mobile Calls (8c+GST).
We took a different approach, porting our landline to the Hero app on a mobile phone using an old S10 as it can sit in wireless charging cradle.
A slight drawback was an update to the app over Christmas which required Android 14 which the S10 can't do. But Hero suggested the Secure VOIP app and this works fine.
Cheap 'landline' ($4+GST per month) and very cheap overseas calling.
Internet connection made naked on 15/4 and number transferred to customer link. Hero ported number this morning. Took 11 days to complete. Thanks everyone for their input. I'm still thinking about who to choose for Internet.
Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

There's a few referrals around here for a decent provider you'll like 😉

I have done this on One NZ a while back, Hero handled everything. Did call One to make sure they had a note on file that it would happen, day of it was seamless.
Porting a landline from a One NZ fixed connection (not fixed wireless, but every other product) will not kill the broadband asset. So of course it was seamless ;)
