hamish225: my m8 just told me today that it will be 028

Your mate is wrong. Telecom do not have usage rights for any 028 numbers. Telecom will be using the 027 prefix for newly allocated numbers on XT.

Currently Vodafone, Callplus, M2, Link Telecom, Woosh, Teletraders, Digital Island and Compass have 028 numbers ranges. Telecom do not.

Your mate is wrong...

028 has no numbers assigned to Telecom, the 028 range is used by:

Compass Communications Limited
Callplus Limited
Digital Island Limited
TeleTraders (NZ) Limited
Woosh Wireless Limited
Link Telecom (NZ) Limited
M2 New Zealand Limited
Vodafone New Zealand Limited

Unless your mate is Paul Reynolds or Alan Gourdie I'd take that with a grain of salt. As johnr has already given us a technical explanation of why it would not make sense for a new number prefix to launch we can assume your friend is incorrect.

Can't be, as 028 is already in use by another provider.

Number ranges aren't exclusive to a single provider.

There are number ranges within the 028 prefix allocated to 6 different companies and certainly nothing stopping Telecom from having an 028 range if they so wanted.

That would be fairly silly after the flack Telecom have got in the past.

I'm not 100% certain (only 99.99999%) but I can see no technical reason, only marketing hype, to require a new prefix.

Anyone out there know, 100%, that there are no show stopping technical issues?

Or am I completely, utterly, self abasingly, sack cloth and ashes wearingly, wrong?

I can confirm that Telecom has no plans to either change or add a new prefix for the XT Network. All existing 027 (plus other provider numbers 021, 029 , 024, 028 for those who see the light and port to Telecom) are supported on both Telecomnz cellular networks.

>my m8 just told me today that it will be 028

your mate doesn't know what s/he is talking about

with respect, there are insiders providing information in these threads who are, amongst others, the principal network engineer for the XT mobile network, Gen-i's leading specialist for unified comms and mobility, Telecom's head of device realisation who leads the team testing and PTCing devices, a senior marketing manager for mobile competition...

in other words, people who know what they're talking about ;-)
