Damager:

I commandeered a cousin's motorola v3x  and switched it to wcdma 2100, and nothing showing for Nawton (by the avalon drive wintec campus)

Is Nawton a real place?  I always thought that it was a spelling mistake on the sign!

Sorry, I had to laugh here - no spelling errors on the name, except for the sentence declaring no spelling errors.

Carry on, sorry for the disturbance in the force...

In Wellington the 2100Mhz coverage seems to be something like 80% of what Vodafone's is from my limited experience. Not very useful far beyond the central city itself, but that's pretty much as advertised.

I live in Nawton, everyday when I go to work I leave Nawton, and in a few minutes I am on Norton Rd heading towards town.

There is no Nawton Rd in Hamilton.

exportgoldman:
why would any network provider bother with 2100 if they could use 850?

Others have mentioned: UMTS850 + UMTS2100 = more capacity.

Plus greater path attenuation of 2100 can actually be considered an advantage in cellular systems, if you are trying maximise frequency reuse.

From a practical point of view, when your UMTS850 phone is broken, you can just put the SIM in any old 2100 3g phone and get your messages (and calls when in coverage).

But from a network operators point of view, the $$$$ from international roamers (using UMTS2100 handsets) might be the main reason you'd want 2100 coverage in airports, major roads, downtown centres and anywhere international roamers are likely to go.

Damager: Anyone tried the 2100 coverage in Hamilton?

Yeah, there's 2100 coverage in the middle of town (victoria/collingwood st area).
Drops off pretty quickly once you get over the hill heading towards the lake though.

Well, after 1 week roaming around in NZ (with my phone on 2100Mhz on XT)....

I would say that Telecom XT's 2100 WCDMA coverage is comparable to Vodafone's WCDMA 2100Mhz ONLY footprint in the main centres (Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, not sure about Chch)

If only Telecom would edit their coverage tool so that it shows 2100Mhz coverage!

Very interesting.

I tried to use XT today in Mt. Roskill on 2100 - could see network but wouldn't register - Network search found "NZ-05 3G" but then came up "Emergency Only".

I thought it might be the Handset so tried SIM in another 2100 handset - same problem.

I drove over to Royal Oak to a shop and still same problem.

I then thought that maybe it was the SIM so I tried it in a 850 Handset - registered fine without any problem.

Tried again in 2100 handset - wouldn't register

Does anyone at Telecom have any ideas - is there a problem with 2100Mhz handsets registering on the Network in Auckland at present ; surely if one can see the NZ-05 3G network a Telecom SIM should register.

Perhaps its setup to only allow roamers to register on it, and the network will hand off any 850 phones to it when needed?

To have people putting a telecom sim in a 2100 only phone and using it will just create problems with them complaining of coverage issues. To me refusing the registration on a known non 850 handset is totally the right thing to do.
