Hi all,

Figured I'll start a thread, and perhaps we can all get some ideas where there is coverage for 2100Mhz.

Yes yes...  XT runs mainly on 850Mhz.  But for those like me who have just gotten a brand new HTC Diamond 2 with only 900/2100 Mhz, and was lucky to get a XT simcard (thanks geekzone!), I'll really like to know where I can use it when I come back to NZ next week...

From what I know...

1.  Auckland CBD.  Locations:  Britomart, "Whitcoulls corner", IMAX, K Road....  All has 2100Mhz coverage.

2.  Newmarket.

I thought XT was ONLY 850Mhz and they were looking to eventually backfill the high density with 2100Mhz when they started getting network congestion.

As a side issue, why would any network provider bother with 2100 if they could use 850, 2100 is shorter distance and doesn't pentrate buildings as well...Am I missing something?

Short answer: 2100 can sustain more concurrent connections.

There is no difference in the capacity between 850 and 2100 frequencies on the basis that both have equal bandwidth.

2100 is used simply to provide additional capacity which is quite important due to the much larger coverage areas of 850MHz sites.

I did say that it was a short answer :)

I know that it's not technically accurate but it still provides the overall gist of it; that by using 2100 sites they can increase the amount of capacity available in that area.

I read somewhere that there were 198 dual 850/2100 sites for XT across NZ and 7 dedicated 2100 only sites (i'm sure someone will correct me if wrong).

So you're bound to find a bit of coverage in the main centres however if there are around 800 850mhz sites you'll be missing out on quite a bit too.

Is it fair to say that when walking / driving slowly around the main roads of Auckland, Wellington, Christchuch

(eg:  Great South Road, Manukau Road, Great North Road, Ellerslie-Panmure Highway, Northern Motorway in Auckland)

That there would be 2100Mhz coverage from Telecom throught....???

If that's the case, 2100Mhz coverage is much more widespread than I thought!

I am getting 530-05 3G signal in Ellerslie (main highway). I assume thats telecom XT. My phone only supports 2100Mhz
