Perhaps the idea of the ads is to do just what is happening. Cause confusion and uncertainty. Stop the people who were going to buy an iPhone next Friday from Vodafone and steal VF's thunder somewhat.

Maybe, maybe not...

.. And you should know you can get left hand drive vehicles in NZ ;) (or at least, into NZ)

Haha exactly.

To be honest, it would be a fantastic move for Telecom, since the iPhone actually supports their network properly. If they do sell it, I'm actually tempted to throw in my Vodafone contract and move over.

Because a mixture of that + slow data speeds on vodafone, make it all that much more compelling to move.

EXACTLY the same for me: tired of fallback to 2G and want to be able to use it as it's intended to be used - over a 'real' 3G network! I'd be tempted to do the same, it'd cost a bit but I'd be a lot happier on XT.

If the extra costs mean I get a fully working mobile service (proper 3G data etc) then the cost is most definitely worth it.

I moved from Vodafone to XT on launch day, expecting to pay the same amount of money but have a reliable iPhone experience.

I was very suprised when my on average $400 bill became a $150 on XT, I'm not sure why, I suspect because the Vodafone plans were so hard to work out, what exactly I was meant to be on I was on completely the wrong plan and it was costing me a fortune.

Now, I can drive down the road and google maps keeps up with me, I can watch youtube live and I don't drop calls, and to check if I'm on the right plan I check the minutes used with the minutes pre-purchased and if it's within 20-40 minutes either side it's all sweet.

I needed a decoder ring to work out the best plan on Vodafone.

One thing i've wondered, what is the GPS performance like on XT without A-GPS. Do fixes take very long?

Basically, it would be like a normal GPS unit.. which in my experience would be upward of like 40seconds-2minutes.

depends on where you are, and all of that.

well, anyone correct me if im wrong. but it would be like any other GPS.

Dependant on how good the GPS unit is, your location, etc etc etc.

EDIT: Basically though, I myself could easily live without AGPS. Yeah, pain in the as* because it takes longer; but I dont use GPS all that often, so it's not that big of a deal to me. It works when I need it, thats all that matters.

If its anything like my Cars GPS, then ever since i've had it, I don't lose signal, unless im in a concrete building or something.

I didn't notice a increase in time taken to lock onto where I was when I go into google maps between Vodafone and XT. I honestly didn't know there was a difference until it was brought up on geekzone.

When I tried it just now, from a power off and it took 5 seconds to lock on a 2km radius, it can't get a good lock because I'm inside a apartment and it's cold and I'm not going out to test it more :)

What I notice more is the speed of map tile downloads now with XT. Faster in more places indeed!

GPS is purely a handset thing - I have two handsets that may or may not get tracking quickly. I tried the Nokia E71 and that was always fast.
