In fact the telecom website itself says that it will operate with limited coverage to auckland wellington etc, when really they mean it will sort of work within those cities and noone in their right mind would want to use that level of coverage.

Isn't that why they use the term limited coverage?

You should really use a 850 capable phone, in saying that not all sites in the major centers especially outlaying suburban ones are 2100 capable yet, as I said more sites will have capability when they are ready.

Yeah, once some come along that I am happy to own I will get one, the N97 goes back in 2 months time so will worry about it then. Im just a bit annoyed at the promises of coverage by the kiosk staff and website.. My big pond 850 capable sierra wireless 880U came today and it wasn't even locked so Im gonna chuck my XT sim in that to use at tech and put VF back in the phone for now. (saved me €15 on dcunlocker I was expecting to have to pay..)

That compatibility site gives misleading info - it tells me my N73 can only do GSM850/900/1800/1900 and thus is completely incompatible with the XT network. Of course, it supports UMTS2100 and does work fine on the UMTS2100 part of the network.

Telecom acknowledged (offically I believe) not long after it was launched that there appeared to be some issues with IMEI's being incorrectly reported.
