I dont see most people making more than a gig or 2 a month with photo uploads.

That would barely make a dent in their charging for uploads.

If they can have everyone seeding at over 100% to other xtra users (because their throtteling makes seeding to overseas so slow as to not ever happen) then it woudl make a large dent in the international usage.

Better than a local cache thing like slingshots that barely ever connects. At least for the torrent you want vs the crap series that the flatmate likes...

Hello,

Free upload is only for new customers or also for existing ones?

Thanks.

"all Telecom home broadband customers"

Part of the press release. Doesn't matter when joined, all customers get it.

Regs:
slowblink: If I had to guess, this is all about promoting local seeds. It is a theory that has done the rounds for ages.
Unmetered uploads promotes behaviour that has individuals offering P2P content for others to grab.
This is probably the big T dipping their toe in the water to see if this market strategy causes people to share locally between themselves rather that 1000 people all grabbing copy each of house from california rather than karori.

If the theory holds, this will be the future.

while i agree with your theory and reasoning, and have suggested this may be a welcome side-effect myself, i doubt that this would be the reason for telecom offering the free upload.  They are probably expecting most of their torrent clients to be on the new plans which dont charge for upload anyway.  Its more likely driven by marketing as a way to try and show the public that they get a flickr.com pro account and give them a couple of months to get hooked by uploading all their photos to the service..

+1. The people that are doing the real damage will all be on Bigtime. (I reckon if you leave it seeding 24/7 you could do 222GB/month).  However, for those people who want to upload video to Youtube and are on a capped plan this will be great.

Only problem with uploading huge amounts is the amount of bandwidth used by the incoming connection requests and ACK packets, I'm going to have to limit my seeding by heaps, as ever since I set the limit at 75kB/s (75% of my upload speed), my bandwidth usage ends up way higher than I expect, and stopping the seeds fixes it.

Maybe they would be better in increasing seeding (if that is what they are trying to achieve), if they unmeter NZ downloads (or make them count as 10% of what they actually are) and all uploads. Until then, I'm reducing my seeding.

All data is charged - national and international. Uploads will be free during the time of this promotion.
