commerce ministry is corerct 3G is suppose to deliver 384K.. 144k is not 3G. all 1st world counties has unbundled the copper.. we are the last one to do it..

We have been over this before in other forums. CDMA2000 1xRTT was ratified by the ITU as being 3G in the year 2000. Commerce ministry is incorrect. ITU is a standards body, commerce ministry is an insignificant NZ government department.

...Oh I suppose the earth is flat as well?

3G spec: Wideband Code-Division Multiple-Access (W-CDMA) is one of the main technologies for the implementation of third-generation (3G) cellular systems.

Telecom launch dates..
Telecom New Zealand (New Zealand) July 22, 2002 : CDMA2000 1x
Telecom New Zealand (New Zealand) November 08, 2004 : CDMA2000 1xEV-DO

W-CDMA is true 3G , 1x and 1xEV-DO is path to 3G.

yes Earth is Flat when we are standing on it and as far as we can see with our eyes. But our Knowledge about the earth make us say it is not Flat but a globe.

so look at the overall knowledge as none of our sense are perfect to have complete knowledge.

This will extend too much... But I digress. Both WCDMA (a.k.a. UMTS or 3GSM) and CDMA2000 are 3G standards according to the ITU. CDMA 1xEV-DO is actually much faster than WCDMA.

EDGE? Hmmm. I've used EDGE in San Diego and Los Angeles. It's good, way better than GPRS, but still slower than WCDMA and EV-DO.

Actually it would be great to Vodafone to have EDGE to fallback from WCDMA here in New Zealand instead of GPRS.

Oh well I better twink out the 3G logo on the back of my 1xRTT phone. It seems Qualcomm and the ITU are wrong.

I am quite happy being on the path the 3G then. Its quite a speedy path I was just getting 1.3Mbps.

There are two types of regims globally by cellular operators.

Calling Party payes => Europe and Downunder and second is
Called party payes => North America, Asia,

Not sure on Africa and latin America

You will find that most of us reading these forums and this one in particular are very aware of the commerce commission's views of this whole issue and it's surroundings. If you hold on for a few more weeks before making any new posts around this issue then you may recieve a nice surprise in the forms of lowered mobile termination rates.

Also, the healthy competition evolving in the current mobile market here has no choice but to see prices drop. Not by much, but your wallet WILL notice the difference.

And if you are going to write the "big" words, like 'termination' and 'TelstraClear', at least have the decency to spell them properly for all our sakes.

That said, this is obviously a nice topic for everyone to vent some opinion and counter-opinion, and who am I to stand in the way of that....?

Even to call from any other country to US on mobile is so expensive.. Telecom and Vodafone has to relook at their interconnect and termination rates..

By just ignoring this issue or closing eyes to this OLD topic, will not mak eit go away..

It costs me the same to call Australia, Canada, Ireland, UK & USA as it does my mate across the street! 44cents/minute (vodafone).
It didn't cost any more to make local calls to a mobile than a landline when I was in the states either (called party pays).
