Ashka: 1. You have No idea what the link could / will download.
2. They are ONLY for Windows.. which could have easily been stated and wasn't.

The download starts immediately on the right click options with OSX10.6.2.

Hi Amended for OS X, the firmware link seems to be missing.. I'll update once I find out where it went :)

Anyway, I am not sure this could be the dialler since disconnections happen if I am using the Sierra Wireless with my Cradlepoint 3G WiFi router as well...

Haven't tried with the new firmware yet though - applied but waiting for opportunity to use.

I'm fairly sure that it's the network, since it happens with my tethered phone too. It doesn't seem to matter what sort of device you use.

I think your being a little bit alarmist here mate, the links have been supplied by a trusted source working for Telecom.

'Trusted' is why I tried the link:
The last thing I expected when right clicking the link to open in a new window was an immediate download of an .exe file.
Probably felt the same as you would if it had been the latest Windows virus downloading on your PC..
Never mind the wasted $80 for 3GB bandwidth.

There is No Microsoft software on my Mac.

Hi jaldvp,
Many Thanks for fixing the links.

Pity we are still waiting for the OSX10.6 update on the ZTE site ~
The OS came out late August and still nothing after 2.5 months :(

At least the Windows 7 guys will be happy.

Does anyone know when the problem started, I'm trying to work out if it ties in with any network changes that were done, personally I don't experiance this issue and haven't been able to replicate it, however I'm using a tethered iphone over bluetooth and over USB.

I do have a data card now and will be testing to see if I can replicate the issue, if it is then I can do some troubleshooting.

Is there anyone here with this issue that is located south of taupo, if so I can perhaps do some troubleshooting when you have the issue as we have more monitoring gear further south.

thanks
Barry

OK Barry, I can pinpoint it fairly accurately for you.  Here is a copy of a PM I sent on 19th Oct:

I've been using my MF636 for a bit over a month now, and most of that time has been spent in Lynfield, Auckland which is a central to slightly western area with cellsites from all 3 networks less than 2km away.  Not surprisingly, the signal strength is a full 5 bars on any of those.

I have noticed in recent days, that after several hours usage, or maybe it is certain times of the day I'm not sure, my connection just stops responding.  It doesn't drop, but Skype disconnects and all internet connectivity is lost.  The MF636 feels slightly warm, but only just and I can't think what else is wrong.

If I try to reconnect after this happens, sometimes it will do so after 3 or more attempts, but other times it won't.  However, if I leave everything for a while, and come back, usually it will work again for a while.  Some times though, my connection will go dead again after only a minute or two.  For example, I reconnected, and after 4 or 5 attempts, managed to get GZ to load, but while I am typing this message to you, my connection has died again.

So, I am at a loss to say whether it is my local cellsite, the MF636 or Telecom's XT network to blame.  The last one seems unlikely I have to say, but I definitely never experienced this kind of problem with the EV-DO data card I was using in this exact same laptop.

There were several more correspondences over the next few days, which included me trying out a loaned MF636 on Friday 23rd Oct.  However on the Thursday night before the loan device arrived, I was told that the Alcatel-Lucent engineers had replaced a switch somewhere in the network and as a result, the problem was solved, both with my MF636 and the loan unit.  I was then able to get a connection, first time, every time, and as a result I wrote this e-mail on 27th Oct:

Just letting you know that my original MF636 performed brilliantly all weekend, except for a brief period last night when I couldn't get a connection again.  I quickly plugged in your MF636 and it did exactly the same.

So, it is confirmed that the problems I experienced were as a result of network issues, and nothing was wrong at my end.

Yesterday morning, I remained connected for almost 2 hours just to see if I experienced any problems after a prolonged period of web surfing.  At almost exactly the one hour point, the connection did stop responding briefly.  But I waited about 20 seconds and it came back to life again, without the need to disconnect and reconnect.  Other than that brief outage, everything worked perfectly for the 2 hours, which I am very pleased about.

I have kept quiet about all this until now, because I thought it was just something affecting me, and I have been given a lot of help, which I really appreciate.  However, it is obviously a wider issue, and it seems in the interests of Telecom's XT users as a whole to get this fixed.

Since the 27th of October, I have experienced several more disconnections, and many more occasions where the connection just goes to sleep.

If you need any more details, please send me a PM.

I've had my USB modem for 2-3 months now, and it's always done it.  Before that I was tethering to a Nokia 6120c and I don't particularly remember if it did it or not, that was always a bit flakey for me.  I'm located in Wellington, usually I encounter the problem on the train - I used to think it was the tunnel coming past Nguaranga but it happens at random.  Although not always, this morning it stayed up the whole way.  It's only a 15 minute train ride so it's not really tied to duration, at least not the duration I'm connected :)

I don't know which browser you were using, but every browser I have used will show you the link in some kind of status bar when you hover over it.  Doing that is obvious to see that it is a direct link to a file.  I suggest you get in the habit of checking links on forums especially, because you're in for a world of pain (and/or rickrolls and goatse links) if you ever use a slightly less moderated forum.

friedCrumpet,
If you don't use Safari 4.0.4. on OSX10.6.2 with a multitouch trackpad forget it.

What does the trackpad have to do with anything? Safari's status bar shows the file extensions like it should.

Well I just fired up Safari for windows.  Go to the options (gear) menu and select "Show Status Bar" and never again will you be tricked into downloading files you don't want!

I have three friends also using xt mobile broadband here in the Golden Bay. 2 have ZTE data sticks and one has a Sierra.
We all have the same problem (sometimes can't connect, sometimes get cut off or most times the connection just stalls).
