At the time like this... I'm glad I'm on TCL cable, however it may not suit may other people's usage, for us, we do odd (big) downloads, I get satisfying fast speed without worries, I get single billing for triple service.

We're fortunate enough to be able to afford 40GB 10Mbps/2Mbps + 2x TCL Digital TV + Sky Movies package and phoneline. My internet speed is decent and often at its maximum, anytime... And we stay within the traffic allowance as we don't just download anything and everything on the internet, we're sensible and selective to what we want.

Internet is my backyard...

Theres is a simple solution to all this.. If you dont like bigtime then move off it, you know what you signed up for.. Dont want to be shaped? you know what to do! Im on bigtime and like everyone else i have the same problem, all my stuff is shaped to no end, all up until the wee hours of the morning, but this isnt a problem for me.. why?? Because i realise i signed up and agreed for them to do it.

If you move to another plan, the pro or whatever, you will get your rapidshare at 200kB/s etc, but then you have to deal with your cap. My usage on bigtime is ~80gb a month even with the shaping in place, after midnight is when the magic happens, although i can surf the net, play on xbox live, skype etc fine during the day.. try and stream a video that isnt youtube and be prepared for disappointment.

Rapidshare, megaupload, hotfile, storage.to are all a form of p2p (not in the traditional sense though), your not kidding anyone with that statement, telecom sure as hell knows why the traffic to these sites is so high, and hence why they are castrate it to a point where it actually timeouts half way through the download.

Local traffic (to hosts that Telecom are interconnected with) is not managed on Big Time in my experience.

The problem that the OP is having with local performance is most likely either regional exchange/backhaul congestion or some other regional fault, there have been a few faults recently.. that's life, things happen...

Please remain calm.

He is also free to switch plans once per month for no charge, so if Big Time is not for him then he should switch to Explorer or Pro.

The folks in the other thread who are having their gaming shaped have a legitimate concern they are playing a legal version of an online game and should be getting a good experience. All you people bleating about rapidhare, megaupload etc etc don't have a leg to stand on.

We all know what you are doing with those sites and demanding Telecom enable you to continue to download 40GB HD movies at full speed as much as you want there by downgrading the service for others is just a tiny bit selfish.

Gamers have every right to be concerned. Illegal downloader's should take what they can get.

Any views expressed here are my own and do not necessarily represent the views of my employer Telecom NZ

I think half of the point of the original poster was that his overall internet experience is not reflective of a)that he has a broadband connection and b)the price he pays.

Simply put, Bigtime is a product that is unfit for its purpose.

Shaping P2P applications such as rapidshare, limewire etc is fine.

Impacting on peoples ability to view videos, download files off legit websites, game online etc etc(all fully legal and normal activities for a "broadband user") is simply not acceptable practice.

This needs to go to the consumer watchdogs.

The product is not fit for its purpose, end of story.

Meh Ive found ways around telecoms p2p shaping (hello darknet, fxp etc). Still big time sucks hard for online gaming and streaming video such as tvnz, which is hardly an illegal practice, also I seem to remember telecom saying in the letter I got "Stream video until your hearts content" *cough* *cough* do they mean streaming video whilst waiting 40 minutes for it to buffer.

Completely disagree, all residential grade internet services are best effort shared network.. it's reflected in the low price you pay.

Contention and congestion in peak times is inevitable and expected, to offer an unlimited service at $60 per month there is x bandwidth and y users.. to make it economically viable they probably provision it at something like: # users * 10Mbit /100

If you want dedicated guaranteed bandwidth be prepared to spend multiple hundreds per month not $60.

It's not fit for your purposes but it's fit for mine...

General web and email is fine (trademe, facebook, gmail... etc)
Local gaming is good
AU gaming is good
Youtube is fast
Windows updates and drivers are fast (akamai cache)
Steam downloads are fine (~80-120KB/s) in peak time
Torrents are fast off peak
I can queue up large http/ftp downloads and download them over night

The plan is fine for people who don't care about:

Streaming video from random US sites
TVNZ on demand
MMORPG's that are hosted in the US (wow, aion, guild wars)
Fast large ftp and http downloads in peak time

Are you going to provide the source for that quote or can we assume you're just making it up?

I don't remember anything like that being said when I was looking at the plan, they do point out traffic will be managed multiple times.

Sorry What? were exactly on the telecom site does it say this, or did you just make this up to defend telecom?
As far as im concerned all they mention is p2p traffic being throttled, (not disabled). Hence all other services should be running close to full speed unless they specifically state otherwise (which they do not). So bassically I dont really care if its a viable business model or not, its being advertised as a broadband service with few limits when in reality its like a disabled dial up service. Fast (at least over 50kbps) http downloads should be a given on any BROADband plan. I had a faster connection back in 2000.

Ragnor I dont understand your continued support of telecom (do you work for them?) why should I have to stay up all night / morning just to play games or download files, when im paying $60 for a product that should work but doesnt.

It was stated in the television advert advertising so-called BIG time, and the documentation coming when I signed up, AND I was told when I was pretty much FORCED by Telecom to transfer over.

That's practical advice based on my experience of what is good and bad on the plan - right now. The traffic management rules have been changed several times to fix things, they don't appear to be set in stone.

Like Garvani I think the plan is good value for money for my use at home.

No I do not work for Telecom.

If you don't like how the plan works in practice and you think you it's not fit for the purpose then cancel it and don't pay the disconnection fee.. go to the disputes tribunal to get the disconnection fee waived.
