The Treo 600 was made end of life yesterday by Telecom, so the only ones left are what dealers have in stock. So that is why I am hoping for a new model soon, my pick is the 650 in the short term, but I know the powers that be at Telecom are cautious with the amount of stock they need to order and being able to move it fast enough. They had real problems with the 600- that is why there are so many hot deals on it. In my opinion it was crazy to purchase the 600 in NZ being 1 x only with 3g devices nearly available at the time

The outright price on the Treo 600 dropped to $500 quite some time ago, and for business/managed customers the price has been $0 for the same length of time (when you sell your soul for 24 months).

Havent seen any word about the Windows Mobile Treo on TNZ. The 600 going end of life would indicate that the 650 must be imminent... (speculation... I know its probably coming, I ju8st dont know when).

As above, its been $0 on most business/managed contracts for ages. Havent seen any new pricing as not at work for a while, can anyone tell me what plan/term the $149 relates to?

meaning there is something in the wind; question is how many Treo 600's are out there in 027 land; That really says how popular the palm smartphone is.

My opinion is that the CDMA Palms in NZ are a niche product. People who want 'Palm' buy them, people who want a 'PDA' get WM Devices (in my experience).

Having said that, does Telecom think they can push Palm users to the Apache/WM2005 or do they have the logical shortterm upgrade in the TREO 650 CDMA just around the corner to fill in until EVDO in 12 months time?

The 650 w/Bluetooth will still be quite attractive to some people. If johnr is around he can back me up with the 'speed isnt everything' statement. Bluetooth, the Treos size, price, PIM capabilities and email all count towards good points for the device. To be perfectly honest, EVDO wont make a lot of difference to me personally on my PDA (currently Harrier, moving to Apache soon), as I mostly do small email, msn, txt, voice and calendar/tasks on it, not web browsing or downloading (as much as the others). EVDO is a godsend in a PCMCIA card though.

Today I visited a Telecom shop and looked again at the wall poster for the Treo 600, which says "6 months free Mobile Broadband". Any normal person would read that to mean the Treo 600 was a broadband capable phone, but it is not and from what I read above the Treo 650 is not broadband either.

Misleading advertising I would say.

I also enquired of the Treo 600. "Out of stock and the Treo 650 will be here next month" was the reply.

This information was passed to the shop assistant from Telecom's helpdesk, but no confirmed price or availability.

Roll on the 20th October!

I really, really like my CDMA Treo 650 - nice device. It doesn't need EVDO, although if you use it as a Bluetooth modem EVDO would certainly help but 1xRTT is OK.

If I was looking for a single device to be my phone/PDA and I had to choose between my Apache or my Treo 650 I think I would choose the Treo 650. I like the formfactor.

this is far more fud than the first reply (by me)
as you can go and look I said that an imported sprint treo 650 is an impossibility due to telepermit rules.
This subsequently means that the only place you can get a phone to connect to the telecom network as a home network is from telecom or one of its resellers. You wanted information about a phone that isn't out yet and I suggested the point of contact should be your account manager if you have one as they exist to meet your needs and they will have access to relevant information and are a reliable source

It is clear from Jama's posting above that the Treo 650 is coming in the same vain that the Apache is coming and because he is an 'insider' he has used them.

On a side note I think I remember hearing Telecom weren't too happy that they couldnt get the CDMA 650 at the time the GSM 650 came out and applied some pressure about advertising the Treo 650 GSM whilst Telecom could only offer the Treo 600

Snicolle is correct: there's no fud. The rules are there, and Telecom will not connect a mobile phone to their network without certification and testing.

The fact that some are reported as connected in this forum doesn't mean it's something possible - it just means that some models are connected. Testing? Certification? Friends?

You will notice reading around here that we can get some insider information, but there's one safety rule to follow. Please read the link.

Sorry team, I didn't mean to rouse your collective hackles, but the cynic in me always looks twice at the immediacy of the "hammer" response, however well intentioned it may be.

I had to ask how come there was such a plethora of "personal experience" for something that was not even supposed to be supported here.

Having said that I am very appreciative of all the posts in this thread, I have the answer I want which was that Telecom will be announcing a replacement for the Treo 600 "real soon now".

I now understand the difference between 1xRTT and the coming EVDO.

So in real terms I have picked up a whole lot of information I didn't have and all in two days, which ahs helped me in my decision making about which smartphone I'm going with.

Its now 25th October and no shipdates in the market for Treo 650 yet?

Telecom put a flyer in the Waikato Times last night showing the Apache and Treo 650 "coming soon".

Any closer information available?

I am too, waiting for the Apache. I have one here but it is a test unit and will return it tomorrow (26 Oct). The review will go up in a couple of hours.

there is plenty of promo material around for the apache. its very very imminent.
i have seen more and more mention of the Treo 650 as well, so that wont be much further i shouldnt think.

mid November seems fairly significant for some other events happening around the place, so that time could see some things happening (sorry i cant say more, and its only speculation)
