Mauricio, have you considered that at the $150+ price point you could have two connections, Telecom Big Time and Telstra Cable 10GB?

A bit of trickery at the router/gateway and you can route stuff that's fast on Big Time via Big Time eg: general web, email, local traffic, youtube, msdn from akamai, itunes from akamai etc. Then route your voip and any international that is slow on Big Time via your Cable connection...

That would give you unlimited data for non time sensitive downloads and fast real time international for stuff that isn't that great on Big Time, for around the same price you're already paying!

I know a few heavy usage homes/flats going with 2 connections either Cable + Big Time or Maxnet Naked ADSL + Big Time ADSL. The best of both worlds once you're spending $150+ /month imo.

If harsher copyright laws are inforced - i.e. disconnection - I dont expect that I will stop using large amounts of data, I'll just get it from legal sources.

I agree with freitasm that its up to me what I download. I also dont have a problem with paying for my usage and not having any throttling etc imposed. Sure most people wont need a big plan for general surfing and email but for those of us who do want to use a lot of data I think ISPs should offer high GB plans - at a resonable price of course :-)

In response to the OP, because their name is Telecom. They aren't trying to please their customers, they aren't trying to be fair, heck they aren't even trying to setup a working WCDMA mobile phone network. They are after your MAR-NEYY.

I pay $59.95 for slingshot and I download about 300-400 GB a month. My download speeds are perfect and as I source my content properly I download at line speeds. Even when I am throttled it's close to line speeds so I guess you gotta ask the question, Since Telecom have a major whack, or 50%?? of the SCC, they have their dirty smelly feet in just about every piece of telecommunications hardware in the country, why are they monopolizing on it soo much. If it wasn't for Telecom, or the Labour government back in 1987?? then we would have stiff competition, decent ISP services and none of this crappy data cap rubbish.

Funny, since you mentioned that I've checked Slingshot and the prices aren't *that* far off what I'm paying in Australia. EG $158 per month for ADSL2+, 90GB peak data, free off peak, and VoIP. I'm not so disheartened after all :P

You mean their 'Next Big Thing #3' option (plus an extra 50GB data block)? Yes, that does look pretty reasonable - $99 for the plan + $50 for the extra data block, and the data banking lasts for 12 months too. I wonder what performace is like. (Thanks for mentioning that! - I hadn't noticed it when I last checked thier site)

Yes, I have had a look at thier plans. The Snap Masterplan looks quite good - $100GB for $129 per month (+ $10 more if no phone). I actually started a thread in the Snap forum about that - performance, customer experience and whatnot.

Not in Chch - in Auckland.

they supply canterbury university's entire internet system (2nd hand info so might be wrong, but anyhow they monopolise student internet at canty uni anyway) so they shouldnt be too bad? but i believe they're based in chch ... if that makes any difference to performance?

Yes, I would agree. Even super fast speed, while it would be nice, isn't a requirement for me. A reasonable speed, reliable connection would do.

AS I see it Telecom (and others) don't even offer a good deal, with their throttling after allowances and managed services.

reality is also that it costs money to develop, advertise, and run each different plan an ISP will offer.

if the plan is only in demand by a few people, then probably it is not worth offering because the costs to launch it would be too much.

I think he's talking about their regular NDSL plan.

$80/mth for 25GB + $50 for a 50GB block and $25 for a 20GB block = $155 for 95GB & VoIP.

'Couse, if he paid $50 for another 50GB block instead, it'd work out at the same price for 100GB (and the blocks roll over for 12 months)

And that's cheaper than his plan in Australia...

where do you get a 10GB limit from? Excluding Big Time the largest plan telecoim offer is 40GB (60GB if you include the business plans).

My statement about 10GB is for the average user. Most households don't have a PS3, and most PS3 users don't constantly download heaps of demos even when data is not an issue. I have only downloaded, I think, 2 Demos from the PS3 store in the last 4 months and I am on bigtime.

check this out from Comcast, it makjes my 10GB guess seems waaaay too high:

Currently, the median data usage by Comcast High-Speed Internet customers is approximately 2 - 4GB each month (these numbers may vary on a monthly basis). This reflects typical residential use of the service for purposes such as sending and receiving e-mail, surfing the Internet, and watching streaming video.

This is in America, where data caps are basically non-existant (Comcast define 'excessive use' as being above 250GB per month, but they don;t charge you if you go over it), yet median usage is only around the 2-4GB per month, and that is even before you remove the effect of illegal downloads which surely skew the median up somewhat.

Nope. I'm referring to ADSL2+: $108 for 40GB + VoIP + $50 for 50GB = $158.
