And I'm not including Big Time in that. I mean set amounts - 50, 60, 70GB's, etc. I would be happy (well, maybe not happy exactly) to pay a bit more for a larger slab of data, that wasn't managed the heck out of. What, with ever more extravigant games, services like steam and D2D, itunes and youtube getting into HD and whatnot, is 40GB not looking a little thin? (I realise other providers offer this - Maxnet & Snap, etc) Will Telecom offer bigger packages in the next few years?

Telecom do allow consumers to sign up to Business Broadband, on which you can get 60GB (non TLoC) with a better level of support from 8am to 9pm IIRC and an included 2wire business gateway, on a 24month term.

TLoC = Telecom List of Charges

ToC = Throtle on Cap

I'd be interested to see some stats if they exist, but I suspect that very few consumers use than about 10GB (maybe even less) without illegal downloads coming into the equation.

And I'm talking about in countries without an a cap on downloads.

Really? I download games off of steam quite a bit. Most of the current gen games are 4-6GB each. I purchased Dragon Age Origins a while back - that was 13GB or so. It's expansion is another 3-7GB (can't recall exactly). AVP was 5GB or so too, and a patch for it that dropped yesterday was 2.7GB (A patch!!). Downloading movies from iTunes can use a bit too, although music isn't to bad file size wise. Yes, torrents could take up a reasonable lump, but they are just a result of a lack of options/choice/ease of payment, etc, etc.

Then thier is game demo's, youtubes move to HD, streaming music services - the demand for data is only going to go up. I think it's somewhat dampened down here in NZ because the infrastructure is perhaps not up to letting people take full advantage of new services perhaps?

Reality is that companies should offer the product and let customers buy - and pay for it.

One thing is a customer coming in and saying "I want 120GB a month for $29.95" and another is someone saying "I want 120GB a month for a good price".

I pay $150 a month for my 80GB plan and it's a good price. Sometimes usage goes up to 100GB and doesn't include "illegal downloads" but includes working from home, five PCs at home, iTunes downloads (including movies and TV episodes), online backups, MSDN downloads, etc.

Is $150 a price point for everyone? Of course not. But does it give me what I want? Yes, that's why I pay it.

AS I see it Telecom (and others) don't even offer a good deal, with their throttling after allowances and managed services.

Telstra cable (if you can get it) - I get 80GB per month for $149 but usaually end up closer to $250 with overage at $2.95 per 2GB.

What do I use 140GB+ per month of data for - dirty old torrenting. Mostly TV so I can watch ad free with HD and 5.1 (around 1+GB per episode) plus flac lossless music (around 400MB per album).

Mom and Pop wouldn't even know what a Torrent is. They most likely use some email and browsing - for which 10GB is more than enough.

But at least make bigger plans available - at a good realistic price point.

Where I am in Melbourne I'm paying $120 a month for 150GB of data (75GB peak, 75GB off peak). This also includes VOiP.

When I move back to Wellington I'm going to want something similar because this is what i'm used to now, but I don't expect it to be as cheap as it is here. I also don't expect that I'll find an ISP that offers me that much data. So all in all, I'm a bit gutted that I can't get what I want in NZ, and I think it's ridiculous that the ISPs, who are all about making money, won't cater for my niche even though I'm willing to pay for it.

I'm using most of my data on backups, Xbox Live game downloads, Steam downloads, video streaming, iTunes purchases, etc and so forth.

@freitas I will have to admit that I just clicked "agree" without reading Geekzone's T&Cs.

What do they say about discussions about "Linux ISOs"? What people download is up to them individually, but when it comes to talking about it where does GZ stand?

Sure, not talking about it isn't going to stop it happening or even reduce it, but it does make me wonder how seriously we can be taken when we protest internet copyright laws at the same time many people here talk openly about their Linux distros (and not just here but on their Twitters).

It's slightly off-topic but is it hypocritical for us to be freely talking about our "Linux ISOs" and then complaining about copyright regulation? And does it lessen any authority with which Geekzone makes comment on proposals on such laws?

I'm just guessing here but Geekzone does from time to time make comment about technology matters right? Or am I mixing up individual views placed on Geekzone blogs with "Geekzone"?

The topic here is about ISPs offering plans with large allowances. What you do with the plan is not the topic.

Yes, I agree it's hypocritical of some to come around complaining and when asked what they use their connections for the answer is "illegal download of content". But it's not up to me to go around and police what you do with your connection.

I guess the real question is, what is a realistic price point, and for how much?

Also you have to factor in the regulation around price/data that Telecom operates under.
