I don't know what company this clown hails from though I suspect 2D in this morning NZ Herald but he says
"Chief commercial officer Bill McCabe said 80 per cent of those customers had transferred their numbers from Vodafone to 2degrees.
McCabe said the reason why so many Vodafone customers brought their old numbers to 2degrees was because both companies operated on GSM networks - global system mobile - where as Telecom used two networks, CDMA and XT - a GSM-based network."
Relying on a phone that only has 2100 and not 850Mhz will only deliver you patchy coverage on XT as well. It does *not* have blanket coverage across all Cities. You would not have been receiving optimal XT coverage with any of your prior phones. If you lived in Wellington for example you'd spend far more time with no signal than what you would do with coverage!
