Ok, to the person who is just surfing the forum just so they can say "Thats already been covered before, do a search ya tit". Please dont, as I have already read lots about this, but it still confuses me :S

Ok, I have a Vodafone Motorola V3x, which I have been using on XT for a while. ( i know I can only use it in city centres). Before that I had a Voda Nokia E65, same thing, and also a Voda Samsung L760v (same thing). I am not worried about being able to take it rural. I need a new phone, and im looking at a Voda LG KG800, which supports GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900. I know this isnt what XT specifies for their networrk, but will this phone work in JUSt the city centres as my previous Vodafone phones have?

XT has 0 GSM coverage nothing nada zip

XT is only WCDMA / UMTS / HSDPA / HSPA

The phone is a 2G (GSM) only phone and doesn't support 3G (UMTS/WCDMA) so won't work at all on XT. In NZ it will work on Vodafone or 2Degrees only.

OR, another phone I am looking at, has 850 aswell as the above, which I know telecom operate at, Will XT work in the City for me if it says GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz???

no.. GSM is 2G only it will not work on Telecom no matter what frequency since XT is 3G ONLY.

it needs to say WCDMA/UMTS and then have 850 or 2100* after it.

*really you should only go for phones that have 850 after it since the 2100 is only in some places - even some gaps in urban areas, but you know this already and seem happy with only getting patchy 2100 coverage.

XT Does not have ANY GSM coverage in any Band nothing Nada Zero Zip

Ok so if im correct, regardless of the frequency, GSM 850 And WCMDA 850 are completely different. Thanks for the help BTW

Correct... GSM is a 2G technology and WCDMA/UMTS is a 3G technology. GSM 850 is not the same as WCDMA 850.

Your other handsets worked because they do WCDMA 2100, which XT supports in very limited areas. As said before, to get the most of XT you need a WCDMA 850/2100 device.

The iPhone for example is perfect for XT. Otherwise buying a handset from Telecom is the best option if you can help it.

Ok so this guy selling this

says he has tested it on XT. But the specs say it is just
Network : Quadband GSM 850/900/1800/1900

Im confused :S

A tool that may help you, bFTP, is Telecom's XT 'Compatibility checker', which is there for just this sort of question and it works very well in most cases.

When it comes to Trade Me auctions, you could ask the seller to use the tool on your behalf (they simply enter the phone's IMEI number - kind of like a serial number) and post the results for you in the Q&A area.
