Great post - flash isn't a standard and shouldn't be treated as one.

I think the move to micro SIM is due to the unnessecary space the normal sims take. Sim cards are highly inefficient, their are microSD cards the same size of a SIM car which can store 16gb+ of data.

Within the highly competitve mobile market I'm sure engineers are fighting to fit as much as they can into a mobile phone/device. And its not like switching to micro SIM is such a big hassle or has a large financial cost involved.

Google for the FCC tear down of the iPad and all the other tear downs on the internet and you'll see how much space they have. They managed it with the iPhone. They can surly manage it on this upsized iPod touch

Well, the long and the short of it the iPad does have a Micro Sim, so really there isn't anything anyone could do (apart from complain directly to Mr Jobs about it....). From all the forums I have read they did it to make it more difficult to move between providers since the iPad isn't sim locked (from what I have read). Again YMMV

I guess if you buy a device, from a source other than the telco, that REQUIRES a different form factor SIM than the one you currently have......then yeah....you buy a new SIM.

Why should the telco subsize your choice of device when you didn't buy it from them?

Maybe for an account customer on a contract.....but a pre-pay? Fuggedaboutit.

Never mind the SIMs.....You'll have bigger hassles when the batteries die in those closed, glued-shut Apple units. The instructions on ifixit.com for putting a new battery in are enough to make one weep they ever bought an Apple product. The battery in my iPod Touch is fading. I'm supposed to throw it away and buy a new one. I can tell you I won't buying any more Apple gear.

If they did it to stop switching providers, they failed so bad. What is it with apple and locking stuff? Jeez its annoying. But there has always been a way to get around that stuff in the past. It's just a matter of time I think.

Everything is so clear in hindsight.

Many people including me thought "why the hell use Micro SIM when the iPad is MASSIVE and the size of the SIM doesn't affect the size of the device?".

Now it makes more sense if they are planning to use the same SIM "standard" in iPhones and iPad 3Gs.

The micro SIM standard was not made for Apple products its just that they are the first to use it as I understand

Yep, I'm just saying that it would make sense for the iPad to use the Micro SIM "standard" if Apple already planned on using it for iPhone 4.
