I wonder how many home lines would be cut off in these areas if the mobile works better, Then all that copper with no traffic would not be good.

it's old dodgy copper anyhow. Fair call though.

Wireless is becoming a reality more and more for Rural customer because of the lack of decent copper service. It's unfortuanatly a sign of the times

Jama, what you where saying re discussing further is possibly setting up a MVNO type senario but providing a network to share as well?

I would think doing that with Vodafone & Telecom would be handy. Pushing for CDMA/GSM handsets to operate on both if need be.

Ummm... No - I was meaning there could be areas that are already on our roll out list and other areas could also be considered if the need is great enough.

There's a great business plan for Vodafone - roll out 3G coverage everywhere, switch the customers to Vodafone and get them to disconnect their landlines. If Telecom then don't have any "loss making" cutomers Vodafone won't have to pay their % of the competition tax to Telecom! :-)

Tricky - to have the same coverage footprint as GSM on Voda 3G it would probably cost another $400M. That is a massive investment for any company.

$400 million would probably be an underestimate. Look at what it's cost for the current rollout!

Taniwha if you're reading this there is a new Voda 3G site in Berhampore with panels facing towards Brooklyn. I'm not 100% sure if this site is live yet but it would be interesting to see if you can now get some form of Vodafone coverage!

If Voda rolled out 850mhz WCDMA that might help, similar to Telstra. Not likely though. The 2100Ghz network will take alot more than $400 mil to give it a GSM footprint - Looking at a the best side of $bill

Really though WCDMA is proving in overseas markets to be no where near as efficent at providing broadband in it's native form (high speed internet connection) as CDMA EVDO. With Rel A coming soon with 1.8mbps upload and 3.8Mbps download that becomes a serious broadband option. HSPDA may offer a peak burst of 14mbps but again overseas experience shows this is effected by limited numbers of users.

Telecom really would have the upper hand on nationwide Broadband services if they wanted to roll out EVDO on each site. For the poorer coverage areas the rural clients could build some new sites at their cost and resell to Telecom and have EVDO as well. (dreaming here but it is possible)

Telecom selling Vodafone some of their spectrum so they can expand their network? Yeah right!

Vodafone's only option would be 900 WCDMA which could appear some time in the future.

Nobody has got HSPDA anywhere near 14mbps.. Look at all the talk of how GPRS could "theoretically" reach 144kbps. Telecom cerntainly do have an advantage for mobile data but they appear to have no plans at all to ever turn it into a realistically priced broadband option in the near future.

thats true.

Personally for mobility it's great but there are better fulltime wireless data options available or coming so really this sort of stuff only really suits travellers and people on move.

Vodafone think they can compete in the broadband market with WCMDA. They really have a lot of work to do and they don't have the network for it right now or in the forseeable future either.

i will stick to EVDO on my apache for mobile data and my decent wireless broadband service for home and office.

mjsit&t SOME of the comments you are making are so stupid.

The killer AP is voice and then mobile data and SMS and PXT

HSDPA and EV-DO are at early stages and both still have along way to go. How much speed does the average consumer need or even business user. Customers don't need 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Mbps to look at the herald, geekzone or trademe website or download 50k or 500k emails.

latency is more valid to me than w**k factor over speed.

This thread should now be locked its gone so far OT

Thanks for your opinion johnr.

- sure voice is the killer AP - but from a revenue point of view tell that to Telecom and Voda who are loosing more & more revenue as voice rates especially for corporartes come down.

Data is the future though and where the growth in revenues is coming from- Voip for future and other bits and bobs as you pointed out such as PXT,Video PTT etc.

In relation to the comments on broadband Vodafone have made it very clear to some segments of the industry that they want a piece of the broadband market. Telecom though are not prepared at this stage to bastardise their copper network with EVDO nationwide even if it means loosing rural customers to other wireless voice and internet providers in the future.

In regards to EVDO and HSPDA in actual fact EVDO is hardly in early stages, it's being rolled out through out CDMA 1xrtt networks worldwide currently & Telecom have had it for over 14 months now, HSPDA is certainly in the early stages though,

Thx

It's indeed way off topic. I will not lock it but please go back to network coverage - to discuss other stuff please open a second thread.
