The network name hasn't changed, it's the joint 3 (now VHA)/Telstra UMTS 2100MHz network in the capital cities.

There is also a Telstra GSM network, and the Telstra NextG network, which iirc, show up as Telstra Mobile.

I'll shut up then :)

I figured that the network list contained "friendly names" but obviously that's not actually the case. It's all moot anyway; the phone still worked!

The list can and does carry "friendly names", too - 3 customers in Australia can roam on (parts of) the two Telstra networks, but they see the network name(s) as 'Roaming'.

What the phone sees is a country code and a network code (In NZ, this is 530 and then 05 for the XT network, so 530 05); the phone firmware and/or the SIM software can be programmed to label this in many ways; Have a look back at some of the earlier threads around the time that the 2degrees network was being built out, many phones saw the network as 530-24 (some still do).

To add to the mix, if your phone doesn't know what to display when you're connected to a network, the network can tell the phone what to display. I've seen this happen many times for Telstra NextG customers who come to NZ and roam with Telecom. The network shows up as 530 05 until they connect, when it will change to 'Telecom NZ'.

Something I did notice while in England was that with my Telecom SIM, it showed "T-Mobile UK". When I put a T-Mobile SIM in, it just said "T-Mobile" (without the "UK"). I guess that's stored on the SIM, like you've just said.
