shiniNZ: Ok We can agree that www.ferrit.co.nz is a shopping portal for NZ retail. Which in my view is going down a good road for NZ bussiness.

What id like to turn the discussion too, is its place in the online e-market.

I believe that its place in the market is to target consumers who previously may have shyed away from online shopping.

Those of us who've shopped online before and have been using the Internet for many years are likely to be able to distinguish the cowboys from the reputable online retailers. Online shopping virgins, on the other hand, may feel more confident shopping in a 'virtual mall' environment where the retailers are well-known in the market.

As much as it seems a old and tired idea, i'm kinda keen to see it work.. just for the record. once more retailers get on board, it might be a way of the future. get rid of that silly "www.ferrither.co.nz" though,, that's cutting away it's professionalism and layout which I think is good.

Its a bit difficult to avoid. Though they could probably avoid this problem by making sure that the .co.nz part is clearly shown.

It happens all the time though, I remember looking up the whitehouse and going to a porn site when I used the .com version - great when you're working in an educational environment. Other websites such as google and yahoo also have misspelt domains registered by other companies hoping to make a buck over someones misspelling.

In saying that if the .com version wasn't taken - it would have been wise to buy it, just in case.

Dont worry, we wont tell you we dont know, because we do.

This thread mentions it on the 28th November (johnr) there are possibly earlier mentions, im not sure. I stand by my comment that a mainstream media exposure of the fact will be good free publicity (people might scorn TCom, but they will still hear about the site, and maybe go to it....)

I hadn't really thought of it in that respect, but it does seem that www.ferrit.co.nz would provide a "safer" shopping experience.

That seems to have been fixed.

www.ferrit.com directs me to the same site now. Looks like marketing didnt drop the ball as much as you thought.

well it must be worth it then, look how serious ferrit is. Thats alot of money to be throwing around.

Telecom has a lot of money to throw around :-P

Question is:

Did Telecom buy ferrit.com before the launch of ferrit.co.nz and leave the pr0n operator there for another few weeks on purpose, figuring it was probably good publicity (that they couldnt be blamed for, because they werent the operator, merely the new-owner-in-waiting).

or

Did they screw up, and have to spend a bundle of dosh to fix the problem. (me doubts they paid a mill for it)

I doubt ferrit left the porn site up for a week, im sure its got more ethics than that!
Although you do have a good point in the fact that the "scandal" has given more exposure to www.ferrit.co.nz and subsequently www.ferrit.com as well ahahah!

Although its interesting, because I havent really heard this www.ferrit.com thing being mentioned anywhere as particularly damaging to www.ferrit.co.nz its seemed to help rather than hinder.

And you're right, telecom wouldnt fork out a million for that other domain. But im sure it was high.

I'd say that since ferrit isn't such an strange name a site probably brought and had to be 'convinced' to part with it. But again, I didn't exactly go to the site once it had been established that it was a pr0n site - so I don't know if they were selling or not.

Can't know for certain on the price as Telecom hasn't publically discussed this so only telecom will know. Interestly Sex.com sold for 14 million (I assume US dollars) recently. I doubt ferrit.com would have cost that much to buy, but its still an indication that some people value domain names.

No... I was just referring to the story about newzealand.com, which was bought by the New Zealand government a few years ago for US$1 million dollars.

Yeah, theres big money in internet bussiness.

But we are getting side tracked from the main discussion on ferrit here. Lets start talking about whats really at the heart of any online business, money.

What do you guys think about the pricing at ferrit, whats good? Is it a real avenue for bargains?

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Ferrit basically just an online mall which just refers you to the sellers website when you click 'buy' and as a result won't have much control over prices (unless its a ferrit specific special of course)?
