I don't think XT seems expensive looking at the pricing in your post... it seems on par with me. The pay as you go feature being the best IMO.

2 degrees data packs is also a cool idea but not as appealing to me as the pay as you go.

Vodafone seems the most expensive to me as you pay regardless of usage.

To say XT's data pricing is poor value, says to me that most mobile internet is poor value for money as pricing is similar across the board.

+1. Exactly why I am going to switch from 2Degrees to XT in October when Win Phone7 launches. 10c/MB is a much better deal for me. i am not a heavy mobile internet user. Need push email and few pics uploaded to facebook from mobile.

To be honest I realise now that didn't do a very good job of calculating that pay as you go on the 512Mb XT PREPAID plan. Sorry about that.

dman: Orcon is a really good deal too, I just started using them yesterday:

1) NO contract, they just bill you per month and you can end any time (have to give 30 days notice)
2) you can rent the nokia stick for $5/month (no need for a big upfront capital expenditure)
3) 500mb for $30, 2gig for $50, 4gig for $70

http://www.orcon.net.nz/mobile/broadband-plans

thats interesting, i hadnt heard of it yet

do you know which network they are running on?

.. just checked out the webite, the 50c overage would be somthing to look out for
They're running off the back of the vodafone network, Orcon is fairly new to the mobile game. You can get voice and txting plans with them too. I've got a sim card with an 020 number on it.

Question. If you add the 500MB mobile broadband bundle/month on XT for $29.95, I know the charge is 10c/MB if you don't use 300MB in that month. Does the sim needs to have min $29.95 every month in credit to stay subscribed to this 500MB/month add on? If I have say $5 sitting in my sim card for my 2nd month after 1st month had 500MB/month add on added, will I still get charged at 10c/MB even with only $5 credit sitting?

No, just 10c per MB.

I like this also, i dont have to top up immediately, even on the $38 Smartphone Extra plan it still bills texts and data in this way rather than taking off a large chunk all at once.

Also the fact that data is doubled to 1gb for 3 months is rather handy and i can now be a lot more reckless in using it - eg ive been doing a bit of RDP while tethered on my netbook, and this really chews through it.

you have to sign in for the 1gb smart phone deal before the end of september but once you have it it stays on there(unless you change your plan/addons)

I've only just seen this smartphone add on, but don't you think the telecom website is misleading, it clearly states you're buying a 1gb smartphone extra not a 512mb extra that's doubled for a limited time.

"And as a special offer untill 30 september 2010, we're offering the Smartphone Promotional 1GB Extra that includes 1024MB of data each month for the 500MB price"

i honestly dont see anything misleading there

once you have the addon its yours to keep

So If I add the smarthphone 1GB extra plan before end of september, my sim will stay subscribed to 1GB plan for $38 (usualy 500MB) + 2500 txts for life? or will this offer expire end of september and everyone will then revert back too 500MB/month?

I just spent 18 minutes on the phone to (probably) the philipines trying to add the smartphone 1G to my prepaid. After sending the request through the guy rang me back and said he could not do it and I'd have to visit a telecom store. (grumble)
Anyway some interesting facts for you all:

Data is charged at $1 per Meg for the first 24 Meg ($24 I'll run up on the first day of the month)

Texts are 20c for first 70 ( someones already posted this)

So if you don't text, 1 gig data for 24 bux is good, if you do $60 top ups then it costs you $18 a month
