cyril7: Feeling a fool is not too much to be concerned about. As for suitable modems, as you are connecting to a Telecom ISAM you should use a Broadcom based modem for best results, I recommend the TP-Link8840

Thanks for the suggestion. I will bear this in mind if/when I change services and want to use my own modem.  Although it would depend on what my new provider is offering and whether it would be cheaper if I didn't use their equipment.
