KiwiSurfer: Was that including the analogue AMPS gear?

- James

It was the AMPS HLR (one rack) vs the CDMA equivalent which seemed to take an entire room.

langi27: They won't remove the antenna's either, 2 reasons:

They will lose the right to install another one (once you take it down you can't put it back up), unless they go back to their local council and apply for reasource consent which can take months and months. So a dead antenna is used like a placeholder until LTE is ready to go then they will go and swap the old CDMA antenna's for new LTE ones.

2nd reason is that it would free up space (good space too, usually at the heighest point on the tower) for 2degrees to co-locate without 2degrees incurring much cost by way of tower strengthening or new antenna mounts a win-win for 2degrees and loose-loose for telecom.

Like in a previous post the only thing they'll do it turn it off at the wall and maybe turn off some of the aircon keeping it cool.

A few years from now they will replace it when the floor space is required for LTE/Wimax or whatever.

Who says we're gonna get either of those any time soon? We're so far behind in everything, it will take decades before we see it.

It will all depend on the economics.  We are not far behind in everything.  When people here look overseas and go "look what they have got" they always cherry pick and find the place that has what they want (e.g. fibre to the home) and ignore the fact that often that is not available everywhere in that country either.

Silicon valley ADSL service is a good example, I've been told it is terrible, possibly even worse than NZ but you never hear anyone saying that.

I just figured when it was decommissioned we'd all start getting emails from someone in Nigeria saying they had the funds to purchase the old hardware but needed someone with a local Bank account here to help with the tranaction....

Don't think you'll see much LTE in this country until the analog TV shutdown so that the frequencies can  be cleared and resold to the highest bidder and of course the obligatory Maori quota.
