it seems the problem arose again, but i have faster download speeds due to new cable and im some what happy that i wont have to upgrade the wiring anytime soon. i was using the default user@xtrabb.co.nz and i changed it to my xtra username. it seems to be working like a dream.
Yep, after all it was the username and password i was using, it was the telecom default. I changed it to my xtra username and absolutely no disconnection. Thanks for your Help guys
Slightly off topic - I have one of these Thompson modems from Telecom and when I set it up I am 100% sure I entered my details correctly, but when I had some problems and checked again, the user name was set to user@xtrabb.co.nz, but i still had broadband.
Anyone know how this works if the login name is not correct? I still get billed the correct usage. I guess they bill off the line number, not the login. So does it matter what the login actually is?

Telecom set the modem to work as soon as you plug it in to the phone line and power. You might find you have connectivity problems with that user name and password (abc123 is the password) you should really change it to *****@xtra.co.nz and your password to ensure you have no issues
You will still get billed the correct usage, your right, they bill off the line number, not the username.
As i said, that username does have some issues that arise in some areas of the country, its best to use your xtra *****@xtra.co.nz as the settings as it would just make sure that you have no issues in the future
It does matter what the username is, you can only use user@xtrabb.co.nz or your ****@xtra.co.nz. You cant for arguments sake enter your neighbours account and expect it to work
A change of username in your modem should not have any effect on the stability of your connection. It's a binary thing - the username will either grant you service or not. So the fact that you changed your username in the modem is just likely coincidental.
If you have a Static IP or Port 25 opt out, then it's important that you have the correct username in password in your modem (if you purchased BB before 1/1/2010 - after which date it became line-based for new subscribers).
If you do not have either of these, then you can enter any username at all so long as the realm is a Telecom owned realm (i.e. @xtra.co.nz, @xtrabb.co.nz or @jetstreamgames.co.nz). It makes no difference. Not using the generic user@xtrabb.co.nz can be beneficial if you ever have to log a fault as it provides another check that all systems are in alignment.
If you try to use your neighbour's details (not recommended!) and you actually have them correct, the service will still work providing they didn't have a static IP. If they had a static IP, either you would not be able to connect, or if you did one of the two parties would receive not data transfer due to the routing issues that this creates.

I need to check this out on mine sometime when the connection's not being used as my IP keeps changing even though I've got a static IP. Telecom say that I have the wrong username and password but I've double-checked many times and I can't see anything wrong. It works for checking my broadband usage on the Telecom meter. I'm wondering though if it has something to do with my setup. I have pfSense controlling the connection via PPPoE and a DrayTek Vigor 120 acting as a PPPoA to PPPoE bridge. Maybe I'll need to spoof the Draytek's MAC on pfSense?
For ADSL Telecom generally authenticate you by what port your line is plugged into at the exchange/cabinet and ignore what is set in the username/password.
Most other ISP's need the username/password to log you in to their radius server to give you access and track usage.
