The XT Mobile broadand sticks will require authenticated mail settings (ideally use Orcon's authenticated mail settings).

older CDMA T-Sticks allow unauthenticed mail relay (smtp.xtra.co.nz) to send for mail service providers who did not provide authenticated settings, but XT requires authentication

The issue is with incredimail as an email program (limited settings for the free client, no support, no encryption).

Recommended steps - change from Incredimail to something else:

Install thunderbird http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/

Call Orcon and explain you need the secure authenticated email settings
No SSL encryption means that your mother's username and password are sent in the clear. See what they can do to enable SSL as this is poor email administration from a large NZ ISP.

The information that Orcon has about their email settings

http://www.orcon.net.nz/support/page/can_i_use_orcon_email_while_overseas/

If possible with Incredimail - export the email addressbook/contacts, and save the file to the desktop.
Import the addressbook/contacts from the desktop to Thunderbird.
This way your mother can easily compose and send using her existing contacts and email account.

I would advise against changing from her Orcon email address to gmail as it requires her friends and family to update their addressbooks - which if it is anything like my mother, who still sends to my old email address I haven't used in 5 years.

Hi there

Well, at the end of the day it seemed easier to simply add Gmail to her Incredimail and delete her Orcon account so I have just emailed everyone in her address book and told them to update her details.

Thanks for your help.

suggest POP'ing the Orcon email into the Gmail account http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=21288 so her emails are not left sitting unanswered on Orcon

LennonNZ: If you are not on Orcon's Network and want to send/receive your Orcon email access then:

POP3 mail.orcon.net.nz port 110 with your Orcon username/password set
SMTP mail.orcon.net.nz port 587 with SMTP Authentication turned on with Orcon username/password set

Thanks

Hey!!  That was brilliant.  Works like a charm  on my wife's laptop Outlook 2003 and my desktop Outlook 2010  with XT and 2D SIM cards and on local LAN as well.  No more  selecting "Mobile Internet" account for sending email from a T-Stick..

Orcon does actually does support SSL for SMTP (Port 465) and TLS over the Submission  (587) and TLS over normal SMTP port (25)
Also we support POP3S and IMAPS and TLS over POP3 and IMAP  Ports.

I will get someone to update those pages tomorrow regarding the settings.

Thanks
Craig
