Because their network was designed to offer the coverage they need with the 2100 MmHz characteristics. That's because this is the frequencies they are authorised to use. This also means they probably have a lot more 2100 MHz cell sites than Telecom.

Telecom on the other hand has designed their network around 850 MHz mainly. Because they do have access to a limited 2100 MHz range they decided to use it as infill.

This has been discussed many times, since the XT launch.

Was looking into getting an Ideos the other day and while on GSM Arena, noticed that there appears to be a second version offering UMTS 850 / 1900 / 2100 / 1700.

Not sure if this is a typo and no idea where you could source it.


EDIT:

Apparently it does come in a UMTS 850 version according to Huawei

Yep I have the mobicity version and it indeeds works well with XT (bought it before 2 Degrees released their version here).
