Will the IDEOS Android handset work on the XT network? It is sold at DSE, but 2degrees is the company that brought it to NZ.

I read the specs, and apparently it has the 850MHz band that is required for XT, but can someone with more knowledge than me please confirm or deny this please?

I think you're confusing GSM850 with UMTS850 - you need the latter to work with XT and the ideos does not have it only GSM850.

So it will only support XT on UMTS2100 which has extremely limited coverage

It will not work on Telecom.

It works in the 900 and 2100MHz 3G bands, Telecom has nationwide 850MHz 3G.

The 850 the page refers to is GSM850 which is NOT what Telecom uses.

The best thing is to say NO, IT WON'T WORK.

The alternative is users getting a poor service because of the bad choice of handset, then blaming on the network.

The IDEOS is 900/2100 3G

XT is 850 3G nationwide and 2100 3G in main centers only

I am able to use XT sim's in my Vodafone 845 (which is also 900/2100 like the IDEOS) in here in Newmarket in Auckland for example... but outside of 2100 coverage areas it won't work.

So I agree with Maurico, for the use as a general phone on XT it's a bad idea.

For use with XT for sending sms for the textmerace.. well that's another story!

Is there any way to check whether there is 2100 coverage in my area using a currently connected XT phone and SIM?

As I said... DON'T DO IT! Having coverage in your area only means it will work around there. As soon as you move somewhere else (and it's a mobile after all) you will lose service.

DON'T RELY ON 2100 MHz coverage when using Telecom XT. This is there just for capacity, and it's automatically used if needed.

DON'T DO IT.

Yeah, Telecom do use 2100 as stated above for infill, but it's just so much easier to say 850 only, as if you use any phone that doesn't support 850 you won't be getting the full benefit on the network.

Ahhh... I just asked the exact same question as the OP. Should've done a better search around first ;)

I'd like to know exactly where are these infill areas? As I'm quite happy using the 2degrees IDEOS on XT even if it means I'm stuck only to Auckland Central.

Does it cover virtually all of Auckland Central? What about the rest of Auckland, Manukau?

As said above, do not rely on 2100 to provide reliable coverage as it struggles to penetrate buildings or any sort of solid wall, so there is many blackspots throughout the city. For very basic coverage it should work though.

Then how does 2D get on with 2100 and the likes of Auckland?? But as you say the lower the frequency the better the building penetration..
