According to telstraclear, they support authentication, so you should just have to enable it to get your telstra email address to work

it wont work as it is still using port 25 which Telecom (and most isps) actively block.

Telstraclear should really get with the times and provide a secure port to connect to.

Only way I can think of around this is using an Xtra user name to authenticate, which will then let you use send.xtra.co.nz.

You might wanna re-read the post from NealR

NealR: Can I just add that the Telecom XT network does not block any ports. We do not do any application or address filtering for any Internet connectivity.

Thats how I have got around it in the past, bit ugly but it works.
Port 25 is defiantly blocked

I'm not sure how to make this any clearer.....Telecom are not blocking port 25 (or any other port) on either the XT network or the CDMA network.

It sure does Neal.  If I enable port 25 to send  email to mail.orcon.net.nz it gets blocked .  If I send  via port   587  it goes thru no problem..

Seems pretty clear to me I think?  Correct me if I'm off track.

As I see it, port 25 is esentially NOT blocked.

The servers which you can send mail 'through' are restricted to Telecom/Xtra's on port 25.  Pretty easy to see right?

They have just restricted sending mail through their servers only on port 25 when using a Telecom/Xtra account & service.

Big deal. Good practice.

Get an Orcon (or whoever ... *insert ISP here*) mobile service to use their SMTP services if you can otherwise accept the conditions (or use webmail of course).

XT does not block any ports

Fixed line Telecom Broadband does filter port 25 from Dynamic IP addresses (standard BB plans), due to spambots using this as the primary method way to distribute spam

Static IP subscribers who host their own mail server can opt to turn off Port 25 filtering to send from their Broadband connection (note that this is a mail server like exchange, not a mail client like Outlook)

email providers (Gmail, Yahoo, Xtra) recommend email client (Outllok, Thunderbird) settings that use secure authenticated settings SSL and SMTP AUTH over Port 456 for sending to their mail platforms.

NZ ISPs (Orcon, TCL, Vodafone) email services do have a legacy of unauthenicated settings that allow sending on Port 25 - provided the email user is on their network ONLY.

The ISP email do not allow external netowrks to send to them on Port 25, as Spammers would be able to send via their email platform and they would get a bad Spam reputation with other email providers - this is known as an open relay.

Some ISPs have added Vodafone and Telecom's Mobile Broadband Ranges to their Access Control Lists to allow sending on Port 25, but they have little control over these networks so they risk Spam on port 25.

The better option is the ISPs like TCL to provide secure Authenticated settings SSL and SMTP AUTH over port 456.

This is the example for the standard settings for Xtra email users
Incoming: pop3.xtra.co.nz, 995, SSL on
Outgoing: send.xtra.co.nz, 465, SSL on

Telstra Clear should get their act together

I can assure you that neither the XT Network or the CDMA Network block any ports. I appologise for the mis-information from our support teams who may have told you that we block ports.

If you are not able to use port 25 to get to the Orcon email platforms then you need to talk to Orcon.

This is not a Telecom problem. We do not block ports from our mobile networks.

If I remember correctly, SMTP on port 25 does not use encryption, even for password authentication. In other words, all traffic over port 25 is plain text. This means secure authentication is impossible, so it would be very easy for a spammer to abuse a mail server if that server acted as a relay by accepting foreign traffic. By comparison, SMTP/TLS on port 587 is encrypted end to end, meaning that users can be securely authenticated.

I have no operational knowledge of Telecom's network, but what is probably happening in these cases is:
User on XT requests a connection to e.g. mail.orcon.net.nz:25.
XT network forwards this request to Orcon.
Orcon sees a connection attempt from a foreign network (XT) and rejects it.

So, instead of complaining to Telecom that you can't use foreign SMTP servers, you should be asking your SMTP provider to enable secure access over port 587.

I have never got the obsession with blocking port 25 myself, just put the IPs in a PBL and let the servers that are too stupid to not use the lists deal with whatever comes their way would be my approch on it.

In saying that, I was unable to use port 25 when using a data stick on XT earlier this year, had to VPN to get mail out.
