Who remembers when they turned off gorgon.xtra.co.nz and then wondered why all the users were screaming about timeouts and slow connections?

We have had a number of contacts with people getting "insufficient space on server" just before the service was reinstated this afternoon.

I hope this suggests some inconvenience for XTRA

If XTRA/Telecom are reading this I trust they realise how angry I am at having to call in staff from holiday to man our help desks and try and sort out what our clients need to do to keep sending email. All of them with an smtp.xtra.co.nz setup must be paying XTRA some sort of subscription.

Surely the idea is that the internet should not be ONLY FOR GEEKS

I got that error too, I thought at first it was my fault, but copied email message into notepad to remove all formatting, and still got it. Eventually had to send email as txt attachment, as it just refused to send any other way.

You should't be using smtp.xtra.co.nz, users where requested to migrate to send.xtra.co.nz with the Yahoo!Xtra Bubble migration. Given is was more than a few years ago, I can't remember all the details, but I do remember being asked to change the settings.

External email providers can use send.xtra,co.nz to send email via the the Xtra SMTP server however the address needs to be authenticated, or you provider needs to supply an SSL SMTP connection (some providers charge for this, some don't).

I thought the plan was to remove smtp.xtra.co.nz; however this doesn't appear to have occurred.

Yahoo!Xtra Bubble was (unfortunately) a complete fiasco IMO, and I reckon it's possible that some people refused to change their settings merely on principle of not liking the new system.

It was down but after a couple of hours, it is all working again.   I always use SMTP  (instead of send ) with no problems at all including emails sent via Xtra from another ISP address.  Never in all the years I've been doing it, had any poblems.

I've just changed to send.xtra, and I'll probably leave it like that unless I move to another ISP.

Who are your customers? If you provide email services you should also be providing your own SMTP services... email hosting 101....

All quality mail providers do that these days. There really isn't an excuse not to provide remote smtp authentication  over 465/587

Our customers run a proprietary software package we provide on subscription. But they have their own email arrangements.

They do however look to us when things stop working.

Its only the ones with XTRA connections and using other email addresses that currently have a problem.

As salespeople their email addresses are rarely able to be altered.

In our package we have been using the XTRA SMTP server with a built in email sender where that is available.

Often this enables our clients to send emails when at their office while having different arrangements at home.

We have had calls from clients using outlook and other software as well

It appears we will now be forced to proxy for XTRA to support them in making whatever arrangements are needed to overcome the hurdles XTRA put in place. In many cases what is required to authenticate long standing XTRA client connections may be harder to find or sort out than encouraging them to switch service providers.

If someone at XTRA could provide a clear guide to switching to send.xtra.co.nz including steps for getting non xtra email addresses authenticated it would be greatly appreciated. We would immediately forward the guide or a link to anyone having problems.

I guess the wider problem is if its hard for us to keep email going reliably for our clients its not going to be easy for a large number of XTRA clients. This is also not what we planned for our focus in 2011.

I have clients on Orcons iserve service, and they don't provide an SMTP server for email. They require you to use your ISPs SMTP server. Also didn't Xtra/Telecom block other SMTPs servers amd/or the port, so some people have no choice but to use Xtras SMTP server.
